Thumbs down Sc Tax Rip Off

Let me start by saying I've lived in 12 states...SC is the highest taxed state I've seen...And yes I lived in FL..

Last state was TN..No personal property tax on vehicles. No state income tax. 9.5% sales except on high end items then you get a break.... TN rates
2004 F-250 tags 75.00 SC 600.00 tax plus tag
2004 Fiver tags 35.00 SC 200.00 tax plus tags
2004 Motorcycle Tags 35.00 SC 200.00 tax plus tags
2006 Mini Cooper S Tags 35.00 SC 600.00 tax plus tags
1951 Motorcycle Antique tag 10.00 SC 600.00 tax plus tag

Bought a F-450 this year $1300.00 tax plus 300.00 commercial tax...Had to get commercial tag because of weight even though it is not for commercial use...
The part that really su@ks is that this is every year.....Think this state needs a Radio Talk show that attacks the politicians like TN had to keep the taxes low...
I support a higher sales tax and kill income tax....It is fair for all then..More you make the more you spend...fact of life....Keep personal property tax on homes and land but drop it on cars.......This state keeps unsafe cars on the road. Some people could afford the car payments but can not afford the payments and the taxes.....
Heck the insurance rates went up over 800.00 per year by moving here on our vehicles...House taxes are about the same...
I'm amazed that the citizens have not revolted about how they are treated....I recently found out about a new major Corporation coming into the area and they do not have to pay taxes for 10 years...Well they say it will help the economy.. Sure it will and the citizens will have to pick up the tax bill.

Yea I could not believe it how the Citizens here take it up the wazoo....
The thing is you do not hear much fussing about it....That is susprising to me..Guess most do not realize the difference in other states...Just us transplants.....Hope they don't mind a little ol redneck like me moving in?

Course it really depends which county you live in too...
I'm in Laurens county Technically... (by 10-20 yds) But if I were to pay the Gvle county taxes for my Truck... they would have been about $350 (348.xx iirc), Laurens is only $231.xx-
Also, being this close... both county auditors basically said I could "choose" my county (making sure I posted the same county on my returns too)

I also went legal and procured weighted tags instead of pulling trailers that would have consistantly put me over the guidelines for a "normal" auto tag. (one verbal warning was enough)
It seems the tag rates are the same where-ever you are.

You must live inside the city limits and pay both city and county tax.
I live out in the county and pay the minimum tax rate.

It's obvious- In SC, they want you to 1) Have a low paying job. 2) Live in a run-down shack. 3) Drive an old POS. That's what I intend to do there, anyway!

"1) Have a low paying job. 2) Live in a run-down shack. 3) Drive an old POS. That's what I intend to do there, anyway!"

1. It costs little to live here compared to Up Nawth, and land is cheap too.
2. Nice inside, metal roof = lower taxes!
3. As long as they think "old" = "POS" they won't tax my OLD vehicles much, no matter how refurbished!

"1951 Motorcycle Antique tag 10.00 SC 600.00 tax plus tag"
Huh? Must be a county thing. I'd buy some acreage in another county and get a mail box if I was getting pounded that hard. Sumter is reasonable.
Might be time to write your local papers?

"This state keeps unsafe cars on the road. "
As a mechanic and resident for over 20 years, including when they still had inspection, I disagree. The tax on old junkers makes no difference, nor does ditching the expensive, time-wasting, annoying inspection bureaucracy (which cost dealers so much in labor to do inspections they helped get rid of them!).

I have another one-
"Get hurt on the job."
I just read where SC will pay Workmen's Comp for illegals. I can't imagine anyone abusing that....
