Custom Intake Ideas!

I have a 1995 F350, with a 460. I have a drop in K&N Cold Air Intake currently. It makes a cool noise, but I have to believe it couldnt possibly be doing anything over the stock one because it is exposed to so much engine heat. I want to custom make one that taps into the grill, or somewhere, where it can draw actual cold air, and not dense, hot air right off the engine. Any one have any ideas what I could do to fabricate an intake in? Maybe use a diesel one? I have a double tubed intake right now so it would have to fit that.

This may not apply to your situation, but here goes...

I have removed my stock airbox and replaced it with a NAPA 6637 filter and four-inch exhaust elbow. This all connects to the stock intake tube connected to the turbo.

This set up sits behind the driver-side battery. The top of the filter presses against the fender, preventing the filter from moving around. This upgrade gave me a 0.5 MPG increase. I now average 17.25 MPG on a regular basis unloaded.

I guess what I'm suggesting to you is, spend some time at the local parts stores or salvage yards. Look around and see what's there. Inspiration is only a blink away.

Good luck.

One thing you can do to the factory airbox, is if you have the intake tube that starts behind the grill and goes to the airbox. Remove it from the vehicle, and the opening should curve to one side. Cut the curve off so air will flow more directly into the tube.

I work in a exhaust shop and we bought 3in shoes just so we could make intakes for our vehicles, my friend got a whole mpg better on his 95 4.9 when we made routed the air filter into the grille, you can also make a heat sheild out of the stuff you can buy to wrap a starter in. In the begginning we made a few out of pvc and rub hose adapters, worked alright. These should be about $50 if you plan it right.

I dont think theres any room in the front of the grille, so I dont know where else to reroute it, but I think insulating it would be good.

Isn't the stock, next to the radiator intake location the best.
460/300 intake parts offer the best air intake of that era truck.

These parts are used to replace the - pig snout in the hood - intake found on 302/351 equipped trucks.

That was one of the first things I did when I had my 95 F-150 w/302. I went to the dealer and got the 460 intake tube and sliced off the curved part at the front. It lets air from the grill more directly into the tube instead of having to go around that curve.
