Five or six quarts? It is a 77 300 straight six.

Mine takes 6 including 1 for the filter. This is what everything I've read says too.

i put around 6 in too. i usually have a little left over tho.

 

My dipstick said over full when I put 6 in mine. Mine likes just a little bit over 5.

What happens if you put in too much oil?

 

If you put in too much oil the crank will whip it up into a foam which could keep your oil pump from sucking it up and if the foam gets into the hydraulic lifters it can make them collapse. Not Good!:-X23

 

My Ford manual (1992) says that after an oil and filter change (6 quarts) the dipstick should read over full, just not past the 'F' in FULL.

if you look at it, this will make sense...

so I put 6 in and call it good.

With a filter change, mine uses closer to 7.

 

I put 5.5 litres which equals 6 quarts when I do a oil and filter change.

 

If you put 5 in mine, the dipstick will say full until you start it and the oil goes into the filter. So i put some in the filter and put a total of 6 in the engine and it reads pretttty close to full.

I think it depends on what filter you use. When I use a Wix, it takes 6 quarts, but it seems to take over 6 to bring it to full with a motorcraft. Maybe it is my imagination. It is pretty close to 6.

 

I always put the entire 6 quarts in even though it then reads about 1/2 quart over the top of the full mark. I figure the oil is cooling the lower end so as long as it is not foaming the little extra won't hurt.

I put in 6 qts even thought the stick reads overfull. I read somewhere that the dipsticks were either incorrect or confusing on the early models and around '93 or '94 the changed the dipstick.

The manual says 6 quarts. I just go by the dipstick with pouring from the 5 gallon bucket.
