At my wits end! Trans to 5.4sc

Quick background.....
97f-150 4.6 4x4 turned 03 Lightning 4x4....sort of.....

So I pulled the 4.6 and all indications were that it would be fine to mate an 03 Lightning motor with the existing drive train.

Literally, hundreds of hours later, I have a running truck...again! However, there are "issues" that I am in need of help to overcome.

1st: I changed to an 03 computer
2nd: Motor from 03 Lightning
3rd: SVT Cluster from 03
4th: PATS and EGR bypass
5th: C&L Intake
6th: AcuFab single blade TB
7th: 91mm Mass-air (stock I think)
8th: 4lb Lower pulley
9th: T-rex external pump
10th: Electric fans
11th: SCT Flash

So, without the flash, truck will not start due to PATS. However, the "stock" tune in the SCT corrected that with the PATS bypass. It starts, runs, idles. Life is nice. If I try and drive it though, life is not so nice.

In "P", the truck is parked. R=reverse. "D" is 2nd. The truck starts in 2nd and never shifts. 2nd is first, and the truck will shift from 1st to 2nd if I shift up or down from there (manaully pulling the lever). 1st is first and will shift to second (manually) but never into drive...manual or otherwise

From what I have been able to decifer, the trans from the 4.6 has a different "value" on the communication side...ultimately meaning....I need for someone to modify the code in the ecu or I need a stand-alone computer for the trans...before I can get it to perform properly.

Now, on a lighter note, there is no speed indicator (wheel or drive line) from the old 4.6 setup. Shift pattern (as I have been told) worked off of a combination of vac and spark.

Any input? Please! Oh, two other issues but the are separate threads....take a look.

Is the trans in the truck a 4R100 or 4R70? If it's the 70 you should probably be looking to upgrade anyway. I think the two use different control strategies and that would be where your problem is if that's the case.

It is a 4r70w.

I am certain that I will need to upgrade at some point in the future, but I am yet to begin research on whether or not the 100 will accept the adaptor for the transfer case.....

Any leads on that as well as where to source one?

I would get one out of a F250 LD that has a 5.4.

Any of them should be OK. If you shop around for a 4x4 you wouldn't even have to worry about the T-case mating up.

All right Silver Streak.....

Progress.....

For anyone that may want to do this.....Modular motor 4x4 conversion to SC gen 2 Lightning motor......

I have answers.....ALL of them!!!

So this isn't buried somewhere, do you think it is worth putting up so that others can follow?

Sander, check out this website: www.madenterprise.com

That's a site run and operated by Mike Dunn who has developed a transplant kit for L engines into non-SVT F150's.

Here's the kit: http://www.madenterprise.com/scparts.htm

Mike is good people, and I'm sure if you dropped him an email with some questions, he'd be more than happy to help you out.

Thanks to you both!!!

Quick update....

I bought a new 4r100 from Art Carr.....O U C H !

Of course, plenty-o-promises about how it will arrive ready to go in, no need to shorten/ lenghten drive shafts, out put from 4r100 will mate perfectly with the in put on the transfer.....

With out the cuss words, the answer is no. Oh, and it only took 4k to find out!!!

Oh bro, you shoulda called Brian at BTS. He's made his name in the diesel world, but he does a bunch of 4R100's for the L crowd.

I bet he could have helped you out, maybe even custom fabricated some parts for you, if needed.

I would also include John Wood in my recommendation, but I dunno if he does tranny's for the L's. I'll have to ask him when I take my Excursion down there on Thursday for a built tranny.

Thanks Stewart!

I called Mike.....hell of a guy....just wish we were in closer proximity to each other.

He was able to answer my questions.....not that I wanted to hear them! Art Carr was mistaken when they said the swap would be a simple r&r. None of this would bother me at all if I had more time, but this thing has to be ready to to the day after Christmas and EVERYONE gets a case of dead-*** in December.......

BTS is definitely the way to go if you're looking for a rebuilt trans. I though you wanted a junkyard trans to swap in. Art Carr couldn't pay me to use their stuff; I've heard too many nightmares. The swap from a 4R70 to a 4R100 should be very close to a direct bolt in, but you may need some other parts from a 4wd F-150 to make it a true bolt in.
