When I put the truck in reverse and I apply the breaks to stop I sometimes hear a “thud” coming from what I think is the rear brakes. I does not do it all the time. The “thud” ranges from very loud, to where I think I have hit something, to very quiet.



Is anyone having this same issue?

I have it every once in a while. I think it is something sliding in the rear of the vehicle. I need to check the jack and make sure it is tight. I had a Titan before this and it had the utilatrak system and Nissan put covers on the track that was in the bed floor and those would bang all the time. Took me 3 months to finally be outside of the truck and hear to find it. The jack came loose and created a lovely metal squeak. I think I will do that at lunch. Thanks for the motivation!

 

I will check but I am certain this is coming from the brakes or the wheels....

 

I have heard this too. It's not the jack. I am not sure what it is.

 

Could the spare tire be loose?

 

Mine is not, but I guess it's possible. More than likely it's either, the tranny, rear end, or brakes.

 

I hope it is really something simple.

 

I don't notice anything when doing this.

I've noticed my 07 doing the same thing, loud clunk or thud in reverse...but not all the time.

 

Mine does this too and I think it is the rear disc brake pads re-seating in the caliper. The only other thing I can think of is that the rear suspension is clanking due to forces in a different direction.

May be just some slack in the drive line. May be some 07s have more slack in their drive lines than others. I will listen this week and report. I usually have the radio on so maybe I don't hear anything.
Sometimes I hear some minor drive line clunk at a stop sign. but my 94 Bronco 4x4 did this too and made it 100,000 +miles with out a drive line problem of any kind.

When I was in high school and if your car was making odd sounds, this indicated that you were not playing the 8 track loud enough.

(Also known as the "ate" track as these first Lear 8 track tape decks would "eat" your tapes up all the time).

 

Mine's also been doing this since I bought it... I've been too busy to pay much attention to it, but it is rather consistant. My initial impression was that it was when I applied the brakes while backing, then "thunk" - thus I would agree with the 're-seating' comment. Shouldn't happen w/discs though - older drums w/self-adjustment is what it sounds/feels like, but again: shouldn't happen w/disc pads...

Berry1234 - did you bring this up at any point while getting the work done on your rear end?

 

No but I am going to. Along with a couple other minor items.

 

I started this discussion...thanks for all of the input...you guys are great...I am almost 90% sure the the "thud" is coming from the brakes. I sat outside the truck and had my wife duplicate the noise. Those brakes were making all kinds of noises. She was also hearing it inside the truck.

 

Sounds like you have your answer....now we need to see what happens at the dealer. Please let us know how it goes.
