High Idling ?

I just took my truck to the dealership, i got off the highway today and i let it idle for a second and it went up to 1,000 rmp, i went to shut it down and it made a weird *** noise under the hood, the turbos sounded different all day today also, but when it is idling high if i step on the brake then it goes back down. anyone had this problem with the 08's yet ?

Mine is doing something very similar but no bad sounds from the turbo. It seems to start the high idle thing when i let it sit and idle for a minute or two. I'm not sure if its trying to regen or not???

The regeneration relates to the engine adding more fuel, increasing idle and increase temp going out the exhaust system. This burns trapped soot from the exhaust system making it much more environmental friendly....

There is a TSB on the high idle speed. Take your truck back to the shop.

Mine Too

Mine does the same, but they forwarned me when I bought the truck. If I have time, I let the truck idle while it does its thing. Eventually it kicks back down & is back to normal. It wanted to do this yesterday morning but I was in a hurry & just shut it off. Driving later I never noticed it.

Smile Idling Problem

Just wanted to let everyone know I just purchased 2008 F 350 FX4.My Ford dealer let me know that the 08 diesel has a particulate burner for emmisions. If you check the exhaust at the outlet when it is at high idle you can feel the huge temp. change. My truck has only 300 miles on it so I am trying to do more research. If anyone else has info on this it would be great to read it.

Sounds like your engine is going into regen mode. During regen mode idle rpms can range anywhere from 1000 to 1200. Its normal and it will run its course in 10 to 15 minutes.

Mine does it on cold mornings (50* or less) when I start it it and let it sit. Thought it might be regen at first but then I checked the display on my SCT LiveWire and regeneration was not on, and the DPF pressure was low. It only does it to me while the engine is cold so I assumed it was to warm the engine to operating temps.

Mine has done this same thing with the noise from the turbos and everything. I also was sitting at a resteraunt outside when another guy driving a 6.4 pulled up and his did it too, it does sound terrible. I figured its just trying to go into regen since it idles up as soon as I put on the parking brake....

WHAT, you guys are discribing is regen.
The noise from the turbos sounds like its do to being shut off while the RPMs are high.

Had mine in for a check engine light yesterday...they said some will have a higher than normal idle....this is the TSB

Get it fixed

TSB 07-17-3 6.4L - PCM UPDATE - BUILT BEFORE 7/30/2007 - INTERMITTENT P0342 AND/OR P1336, UPDATE - PTO FUNCTION, TURBO PROTECTION, HIGH IDLE, SHIFT QUALITY AND IC

FORD:
2008 F-Super Duty

This article supersedes TSB 07-16-2 to update the Action required.

ISSUE:
Some 2008 F-Super Duty F-250-F-550 vehicles built before 7/30/2007 and equipped with the 6.4L engine may exhibit one or more of the following concerns:

• Intermittent P0342 or P1336 powertrain control module (PCM) reprogram prior to normal Powertrain Controls/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Diagnostics)

• Loss of stationary elevated idle control (SEIC) or battery charge protection (BCP) during power take-off (PTO) operation when body is rolled or wheels are rocked

• Turbocharger bearing failure due to very cold ambient temperatures, frozen turbocharger actuator with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P132B at temperatures below freezing

• Unacceptable engine idle RPM ramp rate at cold engine temperatures/cold ambient conditions in Neutral/Park with foot off Brake/Clutch

• Unacceptable engine idle RPM ramp rate during diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration in Neutral/Park with foot off Brake/Clutch

• Transmission upshift quality, engagement duration or feel, and shift busyness or powertrain hunting

This calibration update also includes diagnostic and malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) operation improvements for P200E, P242D and P2033. Follow normal PC/ED diagnostics for symptom or DTC identification.

This calibration also includes instrument cluster (IC) message centre updates for distance to empty (DTE) reads in reverse on dual fuel tank applications, "Engine Warming" turbo protection and "Stop Safely Now" exhaust over temperature warnings.

ACTION:
Reprogram the PCM, Transmission Control Module (TCM), and IC (Reprogram the IC by selecting Module Reprogramming, IC) to the latest calibration using IDS release 50.7 patch 10. When reprogramming the PCM on automatic transmission equipped vehicles the TCM will also automatically be reprogrammed to the latest level. This new calibration is not included in the VCM 2007.7 DVD.

Please print/copy the Customer Information Sheet attached to this Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) and insert it into the glove box Owners Guide for future customer reference.

WARRANTY STATUS:
Eligible Under Provisions Of New Vehicle Limited Warranty Coverage And Emissions Warranty Coverage
IMPORTANT: Warranty coverage limits/policies are not altered by a TSB. Warranty coverage limits are determined by the identified causal part.

What exactly is regen mode? And is it o.k. to shut it down when it is running regen?

Regen mode is when your diesel particulate filter gets filled with soot and your truck responds by injecting more fuel & increasing the rpms to increase the temperature in the diesel particulate filter so, it can burn off the stored soot.

This usually takes 20 minutes and then the rpms return back to normal.

When you truck goes into regen mode, and you want to shut it down, just press and hold the brake pedal and the RPMs will drop to about 750ish, then you can shut it off. Next time you turn it on, it should go back to regen mode after the engine is warmed up.
