being a member of a service is one of the best experiences someone can have.
i was in the Navy for 9 years, but worked with many Marines and currently work with a former Marine reservist.
boot is tough i suppose, it is the Marines after all, but it is not some super charged event like SEAL training or anything. the better shape you are in, the easier it will be for you, with maturity, dedication and motivation, anyone can go through boot. boot is to weed out those who can't.
after boot, well, i was active duty so it may be different but i imagine you would then go off to your training for what ever mos you chose then after that you would then go back home and be part of your local reserve unit.
the reserves i think is the standard 1 weekend a month, 2 weeks a year deal. mostly training and mos proficency. you may get called up to active though, which is just part of the job.
the Marines, like everything else is what you make of it, some things will suck, your attitude will be the determining factor on how you enjoy it. i worked with people who hated being in the Navy and through their attitude they made their life miserable and nothing you could ever say or do would change it.

I have a friend who joined the marines and is in boot camp now. No, boot camp isnt easy, but in the long run it wont kill you either, and alot of people have made great careers in the military. Like bf250 said, alot of it depends on your attitude. You make it what it is. Best of luck with your decision,
