4x4 control module (4x4 flash problem)

If you have replaced a 4x4 module in your explorer, please chime in on this thread. I am trying to load up with ammo before I begin discussions with ford on who should replace this junk they put in our vehicles. We shouldn't be the ford field testers when we pay what we do for these vehicles. Last I checked field testers got paid to test.

When posting please note your model year and when the module was replaced.

BTW recent repairs to my 02 include,
tranny at 70K, new transfer case shift motor, new 4x4 control module, new timing chain, new front wheel bearing/hub, new rear wheel bearing/hub.

Just thought I'd put the repairs in there incase anyone wants to know why I and going to have a chat with FMC

Thanks

2002 XLT build date 03/02. Replaced 4X4CM 10/06. I bought the new module from an online source and installed myself. Good luck.

This is why I posted this thread. I want to have some hard numbers before I just call and complain about an isolated incident. If no one complains to them they get off free to put out more trash like this without consiquence. That's why consumers need to join together and demand better. A module that simply dies because the battery cables were disconnected is unacceptable in my book.

My truck will engage the 4x4 but only occasionally. If the 4x4 light flashes it will not go into 4x4. Have you selected 4x4 high rather than Auto? If you put it in high you should feel the front binding when you turn sharp on dry pavement. The Auto will not kick in until the sensors that sense the driveshaft rpms senses a shaft turning faster than the other (for example when your tires spin in the snow or on Ice) It sounds to me like your transfer case shift motor could be at fault.

On an '02 I'd say it's almost for sure your 4X4 Control Module is bad. You can get one from an online source for about $150 shipped and replace it yourself in 20 minutes. The dealerships will charge you $80 - $100 just to diagnose the problem and another $300 - $400 to replace the module. If you want more info start a new thread, I think we've hijacked the OP enough. Good luck.

02 exploder 4x4CM

Can someone tell me where they found the 02 exploder 4x4 control module online. I wasn't able to find it. I'd like not to have to buy one for $400 from the dealer. I sympathize with the last thread, I've already done tranny (70K also). Just waiting for the clunking rear end to fall out. FORD PN 1L24-7H473-AD or Motorola 01MU152B02. Cheers

directfordparts.com is where I'll be getting my CM. They quoted about 160.00 with shipping.

Absolutly make sure that they cross reference the module part number to your VIN. Ford made several different modules for the '02s depending on model and build date.

I had the 4wd lights flashing too but I removed and cleaned my xfr case motor and have not had a problem since. Took about an hour for the whole job. Used some emery cloth and electrical cleaner to clean the motor armature.

That's the first I've heard of a xfr case motor being the cause of the 4x4 flashing. I replaced my motor because a shop said it was bad and that didn't cure the problem.

It's my understanding that, in my case, the flashing indicated that the computer module (don't know which one) could not determine what 4wd position the xfr case was in because the xfr case motor did not move fully. This left the xfr case sort of in between. In my case I was stuck in 4wd hi. After my cleaning I switched to 4wd lo and it worked, then 4wd hi, again ok, then to 4wd auto. Worked ok. 97 XLT

Now when your 4x4 module went bad would the lights on the 4x4 button even turn on when you went to put it in?
