OK, I have a 2007 EB EL 4x4. It's got a little less than 13,000 miles on it.

I changed the oil at

2,608 used Mobil 1 5W-20
6,025 used Mobil 1 5W-20
9,259 used Mobil 1 5W-20
12,618 used Mobil 1 5W-20 Extended Performance

At the 12,618 change I sampled the oil and sent it off to Blackstone Labortories for analysis. At my next change I will sample the Mobil 1 5W-20 Extended Performance and then change to the Motorcraft 5W-20 Syn Blend oil and run that another 3,300 miles and have it analyized. I hope to determine some difference between these oils. Here is my first report, please stay tuned.

Recommending 4K changes on a more expensive synthetic oil?? Why bother when Motorcraft semi-synth 5W-20 has posted great UOAs and even has the manufacturer recommending 5K+ changes?

Your title to this thread seems to indicate that you plan on proving that M1 is the best oil for the 5.4L but you are not sampling others. Is that correct?

Aw man...I apologize! I didn't scroll over enough to see that you were going to use MC oil as well.

Search for some of the UOAs of the 5W-20 down in the Oil/Lube forum for comparison once you get yours done.

 

Well I ended up running the Mobil Extended Performance a little longer than I wanted. But here are my test results.



After reading more info about 5w-20 oils I've changed my mind on my path forward. This time around I went with AMSOIL 0w-20 which is a better oil than their 5w-20. I plan to run this around 5,000 miles and have it tested.

This is hardly a legitimate plan for a test. The truck will have different miles on it at the different testing times, and environmental and driving factors could really change things up.

 

So a test on 3 different trucks but with the same mileage would be better?

Just do your own testing and share the results and we can all compare.

It's odd that Blackstone referred to 4000 miles on a "extended-performance" oil as "the longer oil run". Change interval wasn't for another 1,000 miles per the Ford and another 11,000 miles per Mobil!

I can't read the report very well but it seems s if it doesn;t show what the start values for the oil additives should have been at the start versus where they were at the change interval. Basically...how much degradation of the oil & depletion of the additives actually happened?

 

I would like to say hi. I am a new member and would like to respond to the question about the best oil available for your 5.4L engine. I have an 07 expy that I just changed for the first time. I have approx 4000miles on it. I use AMSOIL 100% synthetic oil. The oil I use is a 0w-20. AMSOIL recommends 25,000 mile oil change intervals. Yes, 25,000 miles. Their filters are 98.7% efficient @ 15 microns. A better bargain than Mobil 1. The oil retails for $7.55 a quart. It will not void your warranty and AMSOIL has their own warranty. I encourage all reading this to do a little research into AMSOIL. I installed an oil bypass system on my 07 Expy. The system has an adapter that screws onto the mount where your regular filter goes. It has a remote filter mount that a regular filter screws onto as well as a bypass filter. The bypass filter is 98.7% efficient down to 2 microns. That filter only needs to be replaced every other regular filter change. In this case 50,000 miles. Visit Amsoil.com and do the research. If you have any questions I would be happy to answer them. sounds like you are a salesman for amsoil! Whats your kick back?

I have used amsoil in the past and found it to be no different than mobil 1. Oil is a little more costly and more difficult to acquire ( you must order instead of picking up at your local autoparts). I switched back to Mobil 1 for that reason.

 

Now what happens when and if you use another synthetic, say Mobil 1 and get your oil analyzed and find out you can go 15K in between oil changes and at 31K your motor blows for any reason. Can Ford nail you for not changing oil every 5 and deny your warranty coverage?
