Thumbs up hydrolic fluid

i have a 1976 ford f-350 1 ton dump truck. what type of hydrolic fluid do i use for the dump bed? i know it's low and i want to top it off but i don't know what kind to use or even where to find it. checking around at local auto part stores didn't help because they didn't know either! if anyone knows please get back to me. thanks!!!

Welcome to FTE

Contact a BIG truck repair shop, or parts store, tell them who made the system. Ask them for the correct hydraulic fluid.

There may be a metal tag on the system that tells what correct fluid is used.

I'm guessing the system was probably not built by Ford. So those sources may not be much help. NumberDummy's suggestion is a good one. You really want to get the proper oil. For example, I run case/ingersoll garden tractors. They have a hydraulic drive, (NOT a hydrostatic drive, there is a difference). These tractors run 20W-40 motor oil in the hydraulic system. NOT the red hydraulic fluid. Hydraulic fluid is too thin and the system won't run properly on it.

Look for the manufacturer's tag.
