Help - 03 Expy - Codes P0354, P0355, P0356, P0358

I need some help on some pending codes the wife's Expedition is showing. I posted previously that I was going to change out the COP's due to stumbling, but it wasn't showing any codes and I didn't get to do it Friday.

Today, it was running like crap and my Actron code reader indicates pending codes of
P0354 - Ign Coil D Prim/Sec failure
P0355 - Ign Coil E Prim/Sec failure
P0356 - Ign Coil F Prim/Sec failure
P0358 - Ign Coil H Prim/Sec failure

Does anyone know which cylinders these are, and also what the numbering scheme for the cylinders is (5.4) ? I am replacing all coils and plugs, but would like to know so I can take a closer look.

Thanks,

John

Cross-referenced your codes to Haynes book page 6-5 and it seems letters A-H corresponds to number 1-8, so that would mean cylinders 4, 5, 6 & 8.

You probably know this already, but cyl1 is the front of engine, pass side, then 2, 3 & 4 towards the rear, cyl5 is front of engine driver side, then 6, 7 & 8 towards the rear of the engine (Haynes page 2B-1).

It seems odd for you to have so many faulty COP all at the same time, just wondering if problem could be caused by something else.

Anyways, good luck fixing your ride.

Thanks for the info! I looked at the parts store for a manual Friday, but the Haynes manual they carried only covered Expy's through 2002, so I didn't buy it.

Hopefully changing the plugs and COP's will make a difference. It has 89K miles with original parts.

Thanks again,

John

HEY THERE JOHN:
Very interested in your problem. You don't live in cold climates do you? I just had the same thing happen to hy 98 f150 4x4 w/5.4 Plus P1309 and P0171. The last two pertain to Manu. control ignition system or misfire and system to lean bank 1. I find it very hard to beleive that all of these would go wrong BUT I some how don't doubt it. Did your solution work? The night before was cold 0 drove it for about 50 miles to town and back. Shut the truck off was fine. The next morning it was -12 and developed a/serveral misses. Sounds like it has one wild cam shaft in it. This happens at all rpms and a huge power lose.

Shooter 576,

Changing the coil packs and plugs cured everything. It's been running great since then. I'm in central FL, so not really any cold weather.

The plugs looked okay visually, so it's likely the COP's were the issue. I bought them (all 8) through an Ebay store (don't remember which one), significantly cheaper than Ford or local parts stores. Took most of a Saturday morning to change out, ones under the firewall were the hardest to get to. Definitely get the special extended socket for these deep in the head plugs. It was about $12 from NAPA. Do a search on the forums for tips/method from others, as they were useful in doing the job.
