73 Ranchero - 400 GT - Change engines?

I want to do an engine swap for my 73 Ford Ranchero. It has the 400 engine. Can anyone tell me what transmission it has? C4? C6? What direct swap-in engines can I get for my truck with minimal modifications besides the 400 itself? Also, can anyone tell me where I can buy new engines, probably crate? Thanks.

All 1973 Torino's with a 400 used a C6 transmission. No clue as to where you may find a 400 new in the crate. The engine hasn't been used since 1982, so new ones will be slim and none. Ford never sold complete 400 engines over the parts counter. Only short blocks and long blocks were sold, Long blocks didn't come with manifolds or carbs, or any other engine accessories. Short blocks didn't come with heads.

Engine Swap

The 400 is a 335 series engine...The 429 and 460 bolt up to the transmission!!! The 429/460 was an option on that model so motor mounts are around. Here is a link to a site that can help you Hot Rod the 400 if you chose.

Yea, go check out the engine forums. A 400 can be made into a (imo) real firebreather these days. And for a little less $, it can be made quite respectable. 300-350 horse without selling the house, I'd guess. 500 horse if you do all suggested in a recent Hot Rod write up. And on the forums, there are comments telling how to avoid some the costly stuff HR did and still get good results. Plus, your 400 is 100lbs lighter than the 460. And you already have it. And it's already fitted to your rig.

New to the Ford thing need something different then a camaro or nova, found a 1961 E 100 pick- up.Has a no trans and a bad motor. With tape measure in hand I think I can get a 429 and a shorty powerglide in this. Found my 429 but have no clue what year it is. It has points and no electronics but could use help find and understanding numbers. any help would be great. thanks Dave Osborn

Don,t worry about the block..they are all the same. The heads are what you should look at. The most desirable are the D0VE heads, that D as inthe 70's; Zero as in 1970; V as in valve and E as in Engine. They are the Pre Emission heads and have HUGE ports and small Chambers and......Screw in Rocker shafts!!!!! However any year will make a TON of touque with a Cam, Carb, Manifold & Exhaust!
