i have a 69 351 winsdor that has 9-1 compression. it has been recently rebuilt with trw flet top pistons.
it has the original small heads and small cam.
i would like to get a lot more from it with changind the heads, cam-roller, and intake-carb. can someone suggest a good configuration for me to use. i would like to bumb up the comp with smaller chamber heads or shaved heads to do this. any help you can give me i would appreciate.

these heads are very small in my opinion. the valve sizes are as follows.

i would like to know if i use a set of aluminum heads with 202 valves, what roller cam should i use and will i need to do any extra work on it. if i shave the heads will i do more damage than good.
i dont want a motor so radical that i cant street it but i want to get around 350 hp out of it.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Jan-02 AT 05:34 PM (EST)]If you have the original heads (D0OE-C or C9OE-C), which it sounds like you do, with flat top pistons you are getting about all the compression you can run on the street now. It should be in the neighborhood of 9.5 to 1.
Yes the valves on these heads are small, but they are larger than the majority of later model heads (post '77) which only have 1.78 intake and 1.45 exhaust. A mild porting job on these heads will really help out, especially on the exhaust side. Check out Fordmuscle.com for good info on head flow numbers and porting tips. With some porting these heads should get you to 350 hp with a streetable cam, and a roller would make it no trouble at all. In a flat tappet something like .475 to .500 lift with 215-225 duration @ .050. In a roller you would want about the same duration, or a little less, as the flat tappet but you can get more lift up around .530 to .540. Roller cams, especially the retrofits, are expensive. The cheapest way to go is with a small base circle cam, now only available from Comp Cams, and the stock roller lifter and spider setup. The problem with this is there is not a wide variety of small base circle cams to choose from. If you use Crane Cams retrofit lifters #36532-16 you can use any available roller cam out there, but the lifters will set you back almost $400. Of course any of the aluminum heads offered will flow better out of the box than the ported stock castings, it just depends on how much you want to spend. If I already had a good set of D0OEs or C9OEs I would probably try that first.

I have a Comp Cams Retrofit Roller in my 69 Mustang 351W, number 35-452-8. At the moment it runs poorly. Only 6 inches vacuum at idle which will not operate the power brakes. I have had several good running engines in my day and this is not one of my favorites. I am contemplating pulling out the cam for a different grind. The one i have is 230 deg duration at 050 lift and .544 valve lift and 110 deg lobe seperation. I just talked to the tech help ;ine today and they confirmed that the cam is performing as designed. For more vacuum they suggested 114 deg lobe seperation. They can custom grind one for $250. I am looking around at some other brands but really have not found a whole lot that i would be willing to try. If i was doing it again i might be tempted to use a tried and true standarad hydraulic where there is a wider selection of cams available.
