Pilot Bearing help - 61 Econoline
I have acquired a 200 CI 6 to be dropped into my 61 Econoline P/U. Being a newbie at this and wanting to keep costs low, I am trying to do this myself. Anyway, finding difficulties trying to put the clutch/bellhousing back together with the engine... and believe the problem is that I am missing some parts - like the pilot bearing, and what it rides in? (I understand that it should reside at the end of the crankshaft). I am guessing that the engine came out of a vehicle that had an automatic transmission. Any help is appreciated - thanks...

Found under RockAuto an 8016 bearing - and purchased at Napa Auto. It slipped in real easy into the crankshaft... is this right? (OD is 1.378 inches... ID is .6299, which is just a hair smailler than the .634 max. stated for the transmission input shaft). Also, I placed the rubber backing towards the transmission, not towards the crankshaft - does anyone know if this is correct? Lastly, is there any special tricks involved in re-connecting the transmission back to the engine? I have used a universal tool in reinstalling the clutch and pressure plate....

1961 Econolines used 144 or 170 engines. The transmission is the 2.77 crash first type. 200 engines used the Ford 3.03 all syncro transmission, only. A 200 using the earlier 2.77 transmission, is the reason I typed no part number for the pilot bearing, because I didn't know what would fit.
The 144/170 pilot bearing is: 1.38" O.D. - .629 I.D. - 1/2" thick.
The 200 pilot bearing is: 1.38" O.D. - 11/16" I.D. (Ford p/n: C20Z-7600-A)
Both of these are solid bronze bearings.

Have not gotten it all done yet - but it appears that the scatter shield (from the transmission) aligns up with the holes on the 200 CI. It seems like a direct swap - I could give more info, but I am learning about this as I go along... I just know that the 8016 pilot bearing fits into place w/o having to pound it in. Will supply more info as this project goes along.

I'm trying to remember the details when I helped a friend replace the 144 in his Falcon with a 200. I think the 200 had a different bellhousing pattern, so we had to hunt down a bellhousing to adapt to the "toploader" pattern.
As an aside, the non-synchro transmissions were used in Canada until 1964.
