Blinking Overdrive light Help!!!
I have a 1995 Ford Explorer xlt. Overdrive light has been blinking for sometime now. The car does not kick into overdrive and revs pretty high- BUT Once i let off the gas a bit and press back down on the accelerator - IT DOES KICK INTO OVERDRIVE!!
A few weeks ago I tried to get the codes pulled by Ford but they told me the computer was not communicating with their scanner tool(both style scanners they have). So I took the car back. Another mechanic told me that it was a bad solenoid. Instead of guessing which solenoid I purchased a valve body assembly for under $200(MSRP $800) which includes all the solenoids as a local Lincoln Mercury shop was going out of business. I dropped the pan- no metal shavings, normal color/smell to the oil. replaced the valve body and gaskets, checked all the wiring and ground straps- ok. Reset the Cpu and test drove the car- The car still has the same problem!!!
*Question is- since the car does kick into Overdrive when I release the pedal and then press back down could the problem be a faulty throttle position sensor??? Or any other ideas? Thanks, Chris

The first thing I would do would be to get the trouble codes from the computer. The vast majority of '95's were EEC-IV/OBD-1, so you can likely get trouble codes with nothing fancier than a paper clip. not sure why Ford couldn't get trouble codes, is it possible they thought your '95 was OBD-2/EEC-V and were trying to get codes from the under dash OBD-2 connecter (which is almost always non-functional in '95's)? The EEC-IV self-test connectors are under the hood, driver's side.

That happens to my 95 about every 6-9 months. Pulled codes, revealed nothing. Unhook the battery for 5 mins to reset the computer. If the light comes right back on, get it checked out. Also, it's not good to drive it with the OD light flashing as it's putting extra(cripple/limp mode) strain on the trans.

Thanks for all your replies!!
MrShorty, you raised an Excellent point!!! The Ford Mechanic was trying to pull codes from the under dash OBD-2 connecter, which according to you is almost always non-functional in '95's. I did not nor did the mechanic know that the the EEC-IV self-test connectors are under the hood- driver's side!! I will take it back and educate him on where to pull the codes, rather than basically guessing what the trans problem is.
