I was surprised that the Ranger outsold all the other light trucks except the Tacoma.

All this is ford's fault. Lack of improvment in Hp, torque, milles/gallon,etc. In addition competition offering better products.

Plus the trucks have gotten bigger and heavier over the years. My fullsize, shortbox '59 M100 weighed about 3700 pounds with me in it. Now even a Ranger weighs more than that.
