Is there a law saying Ford can not R & D their own engine while under contract with Cornbinder? Speaking of contract... contracts come to an end. The vendor isn't guaranteed a renewal of that contract. Therefore a company (Ford) can either create a market for vendors to bid on, or take the project on themselves. Ford is forced to defend itself for planning ahead. If Navistar could have developed a reliable unit to replace the 7.3, Ford wouldn't need to look elsewhere. Maybe I'm way off, but I felt the need. I don't.........not sure of the current situation concerning musical owners but Detroit has always meant GM to me.
Pretty sure the 6.2/6.5 junk were considered Detroit Diesels.
