Okay, I've got the original 400M out of the 1979 bronco and am getting ready to pull my donor 460's... one is out of a 1989 E350 van(needs rebuilkd) and the other mint one is out of a 1988 F450. The E350 one is fuel injected while the F450 one is carb'ed. I am planning on using the exhaust manifolds off the van engine onto the F450 one, if needed for space issues, and any for any other issues I have with the power steering .I'm sure I'll have enough parts to figure out. My main question has to do with the monting of the donor 460. I haVE a couple sets of L&L mounts for the existing motor mounts, a couple sets of 2wd 1979 Motor mounts, and the existing motor mount towers in each of the donor vehicles. I also have heard of the performace unlimited mounts which are supposed tro be much better than the L&L's due to less rubber and more even stress. I would love to hear from you folks who have done this on these choices, which one is best, and any other ideas I haven't found out about yet (I did see one guy, Northride, that's got a custom set for $225.00 but that is money I really don't have for something that's as good as something cheaper or, better, something I already have. Thanks in advance for all your inputs.

The specific engine family is 351M/400

Some people have said they have broken the L&L motor mounts.

IMO > nothing beats the OEM 460 cross bolt system of for engine mounting.

The 460 mounts from Econolines are completly different and won't work. The mounts used from 1980 F Series and later won't work either. The 1973/79 F Series are the only type that will work. The mounts are: Two metal perches one right, one left that bolt to the crossmember (D3TZ-6028-A/D3TZ-6029-A), the two rubber mounts (2-D3TZ-6038-A) that bolt to the perches, and the two upper R/L brackets (D3TZ-6030-A/D3TZ-6031-A) that bolt to the mounts and then to the engine. These mounts were used 1973/79.

 

numberdummy, are you saying there are 385 (429-460) series mounts from ford for the 73-79 4x4's

 

Now the perches you talk about were only for the 2wd vehicles, correct? Will they work in the 4wd vehicles?

 

These were the parts sold for many yrs "over the Ford parts counter" to all the ppl who were doing these conversions on 2 or 4 wheel drive F100/350's and 1978/79 Broncos. In those days (before 1990), if anyone wanted the mounts, there were no aftermarket suppliers like there are today. It was the Ford Dealer or a junkyard. The mounts and upper brackets will work fine, what happens with the perches when one has 4 wheel drive, I'm not sure. I've sold so many sets of those mounts, I can still remember the complete part numbers.

Yes they will work.

The thing that is required is the Rear sump oil pan and oil pickup tube.

Otherwise, because of the front sump pan the oil drains onto the crossmember and during extreme driving the pan would hit it.

These mounts that I currently have were told to me to be from 1 1978 F350 with 460.

I think the most obvious problem I see with using these types of mounts is that they require being mounted to the crossmembers which is very apparently abscent on a 4wd application (no crossmember as that is where the front wheel drive axle is located)>>>OOPS!!!

 

Those are 460 motor mounts all right.

Yes, I am working on a 1979 Bronco 4x4 which is very close to F150 4x4 at least as far as thew engine compartment is concerned. As I said, The pictures you folks sent me seem to incdicate the requirement of a front crossmember to mount these mounts on which is missing on a 4x4 application due to the presence of the front wheel drive axle assy in that same location...does anyone have an answer for this dilemna (Obtaing and cutting a 2wd crossmember seems like an alot of unnecessary work and expense)?

 

lisagoud, the L&L mounts do break, but they also dampen better (more rubber), i fixed mine by putting a limiting cable on the block to the frame, all you need is those mounts, they bolt right to yout bronco towers and to your 460........your exhaust manifolds might hit the frame, since you are working with later model stuff, the only way to tell is a trial fit, i did this swap 20 years ago, it was fairly easy
