I was just wondering if anyone on here has ever been to any mud run/ mud race type events. I have the chance to go to one here locally its a small town family fun event but I was just wondering what everyone thinks about it as far as tearing up my truck. I have a 78 F150 w/ 351M C6 6" lift and 35" tires. Obviously I wouldnt run my truck really hard but is there any other common mechanical failures at these events. The guy said they have a class for bone stock trucks all the way up to full blown racers on nitrous etc. I would be some where in between with my tire size and lift. If I kinda baby the old girl and let off once I get stuck will I be OK? Its a daily driver and its pretty solid mechanically and I just think it would be fun to run thru the pit. I could care less about the competition part of it Im just thinking of doing it for fun and was wondering about breaking something. Looking forward to hearing what yall have to say!!!!!

 

if its your DD i would be weary! i mean, chances are you'll be fine but there is always that chance. i've been to several (as a competitor and bystander) mud runs and they are a lot of fun but i wouldnt take my everyday around town truck unless you can afford to fix it.

best things to do... seal your dizzy cap, make sure all your u-joints are in good condition, and maybe get one of those pre-filters for your air cleaner! also before you go spray the underside with baby oil or WD-40 so that the mud wont stick as easily. the heavier you are the more you'll sink!

fish has a very good point regarding the posibilities of tearing up a daily driver.
However, you will never know what itis like until you do it! If you know that when you let off of the gas, it gets stuck, then remember one thing,,,never let off! Drop the hammer like you have never done before, and let it all hang out. Hopefully when it is over, all of the parts are still in the same place.
I say never let off, but even that has limitations. Most guys do major damage when they get stubborn and keep tryuing to go when they are making little progress, or no progress at all. If you are stuck you are stuck, simple as that. Drive it till she cant go any farther, and don't push it to gain another foot or two. That is usually when carnage occurs. I think you should try it, never know til you do.

Part of the reason that I bought this old truck was so that I could have a little fun in the mud so I think Im gonna go for it. I think I'll just give her hell but use some sense and let off when Im getting stuck instead of just staying in it and tearing something up. The good thing is they will hook a cable on to me so if I dont make it I dont have to even get out and get muddy they will just pull me out. Cant be any harder on equipment than playing around on the muddy farm roads and fields right??

PS.... the wife will take alot of pics with her new digital camera so I'll be sure to post some, maybe the old Ford will make a good showing. He said I will be in a stock class where lift and tires are the only mods allowed. So basically other street driven trucks.

 

if u want to run it just to run it, go for it. but like everyone said b4 just let off when u think ur truck has had enough. I took my 78 f150, same setup as u in a hole. This wasnt a pit, it was a freaking bottomless hole. And i put the ***** to the wall and luckily didnt break anything in the hole. i burried it to the frame but it was fun. plus mud bogs are fun, never done it cause the payoff sucks around here. If u win around here the payoff is 250.00 for 1st.

 

Have a blast bud, but I also remambered to remind you to make sure your anchor points are up to the challenge. Gettin stuck should be expected, but you don't wanna look silly when that dozer trys to yank your ride out, and the only thing that comes out is the bumper.

Everyone is assuming it's a bog, if it's a mud drag even street tires rarely actually get stuck. as to driving in either the old saying is "drive it like you stole it". Hammer the throttle and let it rip.

i have a 1984 f-150 4x4 351w with 4spd with the grannies... and i took 2nd place in street stock .. with no lift .. and 33's and there was 57 trucks... and its my daily driver... trick is... bring a pressure washer with you when you go.. then hoze it off when your done... keeps stuff .. from getting full of sand and such... mud drags i run in.. muds about 2 ft deep .. then about 1 ft of water on top... awesome time let me tell you only about 1.5ft deep by the end of the day if that ... if i was you run street stock... and put it in 4 low.. and in 2nd .. and put your foot to the rugs

 

Yea I was wondering what gear to run if I go. I was thinking 4hi with the tranny in 1. Maybe 4LO with the tranny in 2. To bad I dont get to practice first hahaha.

 

even if you dont enter your truck into the competition, you will have a load of fun.....

make sure you dont drink too much if your driving home lol

 

Go for it, I am waiting for them to advertise the one they have here, my 77 will get run, thats what it is for......! Maybe even try my 63, Ol'Mater... That is what friday and saturday nights were back home in MO, everyone would go out to north lake and wheel n mud all night, something breaks, fix it, stuck pull it out, get done have a beer!
