I've got over 8200 miles on my EL, and no sign of leakage.
My guess is that the fitting was over torqued at the factory or a case that may have been misformed due to an air pocket in the molding process. I have also seen fittings cross-threaded causing the case to crack. I could keep going with possibilities, but I think you get the picture.

Update
..Now this week I will drop the Expy off to have the bands and other parts replaced in the 2nd transmission because of a squealing sound @ 20- 30 Mph. Love the truck ,but you gotta wonder

Berry1234, I couldn't tell you what the transmission costs , but I am pretty sure that Ford did not make any money on my expy. I will say this ,I picked it up after the latest overhaul and it runs great , it shifts smoother then it ever did ,and does not hang up in a gear or slip . It runs like a 40K+ SUV should , I guess the question is; will it last .Which I hope it does . I would like 150K at least out of this expy before it starts breaking on a regular basis, however for that to happen it would needs to stop breaking now

The end result of the leak was the transmission being replaced because they could not get a case

Well here we go again ... 12000 +K later. Today the bands and clutches were replaced for the 2nd time ,however this time they changing a shaft. Ford would not provide the use of a loaner car nor would Ford pay for a rental so I had to rent one . The service manager did tell the shop to get the job done in one day which they did .Still love the truck but I quit wondering about the transmission reliability.I do not have any problem with the dealership or any of it's staff , every one there is as professional as the day is long
