i blew 2 fuses the other night, one in my power point and one in my lighter. i was using my ipod in the lighter and my beacon light outta the powerpoint. i changed them both (20 amp) and the lighter is fine but the power point keeps popping. any ideas as to what the problem might be? id take it right to ford but unfortunately my warranty expired 9 days ago . thanks for any help.

 

Mine does the same thing. I took it to ford and all they did was replace the fuses they said they could nto duplicate it so they dont know whats wrong. mine has not blown a fuse in about a month thou. knock on wood.

 

Sounds like a chaffed wire possibly. The only thing I could tell you is to start at the power point and work you way back to the harness and see if you can see a spot where the wire might be grounding out. Could be a bad power point too. It might be grounding out right there. I'd probably unplug the power point and put another fuse in to see if it still pops. If it doesn't, chances are something is grounding out inside the plug.

 

My fuse blows when I plug in my DeWalt 18v vehicle charger for an extended period. Maybe your strobe is drawing too much power? you could rewire straight to the battery with heavier gauge wire and stronger fuse possibly.

 

Does the power point fuse blow as soon as you put it in, or just when you plug in your beacon? If it is as soon as you put the fuse in then you have a dead short somewhere. If it is just the beacon that is causing it, there is either an internal problem with it, or it just draws too much current for the power point. Most power points are only fused to handle 10 to 15 amps to charge small items like cell phones or ipods. The lighter is usually 20 amps. If the power point has anything else sharing it's circuit that will take away from your available supply. DO NOT replace the fuse with a larger one than the manual calls for or you may fry the wiring and start a fire. If the beacon works in the lighter plug then I would use that one. Or you could go with the above suggestion and wire in your own circuit from the battery, but if you do so, definately fuse it and use the correct guage wire.

 

ive used the beacon for three seasons of plowing and never had a problem. this is my first year using that and the ipod at the same time. both are on 20 amp fuses. after i changed the fuses the power point blew when i plugged my ipod into it because the ipod was on for a few seconds then stopped working. i never tried the beacon after i changed fuses. i'll take a look at the wires to see if anything doesnt look right. thanks for all your input i really appreciate it.

 

check the end of the plug in, i have seen them loose causing a poor connection,--poof goes da fuse! otherwise johnny's on it!!

 

It only happens when you plug something in so it most likely is a loose connection or something in the power point or the plug of what you are plugging into the power point. I blew mine once when the fiance was trying to use a hair dryer with a power inverter. replaced and worked fine, didn't try the dryer again. i would try to blow the power point socket out with air and check the connections on the back and you could try to plug your ipod into another car and see if it blows that fuse=something wrong with your ipod cord, short somewhere.
