P- Truck Tags

Anyone know if the SC DMV is phasing out the "P-tags" aka: "Truck tags"?

It seems as of lately I've seen a lot more newer F-250/2500 series trucks and above (all brands) with the normal license plates (either styles).

They don't even seem to list them on the website anymore. I guess they're waiting for all the existing tags to expire before thier issued the normal tag??

I thought it was based upon your total GVWR of the MY truck? This has confused me even more...

I spoke to the lady in-charge of the license tag unit. No changes in P tag issuance or requirements. If you have a specific question her name is Ms. Peggy Fouty,803-896-8095.

I think you guys are seeing the old "plate switch" going on...people buy a car....pay the property tax....get a plate......then either sell or junk it and transfer the plate to a new truck......Lots of that going on.........saves you forking out the tax money till next year and it's a little less......the plate can be transferred to any vehicle......you just lose the "rights" of having the truck plate....i"e"......parking in loading zones....etc.

A buddy of mine called me earlier today and told me that he has a trk plate b/c his F350 freq. tows/hauls loads that surpass the 9,001lbs gvwr mark. The std issue plates will only "cover" you up to 9,000 lbs. He only assumed this tho.. I suppose I can call the DMV on the way down to FL. tomorrow or earlyyy Fri. to confirm this...
