Hello all got no answer from the axle etc forum. 97 f150 4x4 ext cab. here is my problem with all the snow recently the roads here are quite uneven and rough.Since then my truck has developed a clunking noise not all the time but seems when the truck is moving on an uneven surface. On clear pavement it does not seem to happen yet. very irregular pattern. I have not noticed any vibration at highway speeds. Could this be u-joints? I crawled under the truck with it parked in gear and tried to move the driveshaft and there seems to be a small amount of play in it. Am I going in the right direction? also I had someone in the rear seat and when the clunk happened he said he could feel it under his feet that would put it about right for the front u joint I think? sorry for the long post. any help would be appreciated.

 

ah the infamous driveshaft "clunk"

That's been around for years.

What I do is stuff some hightemp sticky grease inside the yoke receiver.
This seems to take the clunk out.

 

thanks for the reply million but it doesnt seem like that kind of a problem. it only happens when the truck goes uneven for lack of a better word its real hard to explain. Say if your front end is going up a hill and the rear is going down like a driveway or when the front leans to the right while the rear is to the left. Hope that explains a little better

 

Is it a single clunk or one that correspondes to a spinning driveshaft? That would narrow it down quite a bit

While underneath, you could check for shiny metal spots indicating where something is hitting or rubbing.

 

single clunk. then be ok for a bit then one no real pattern to it

 

Also it will happen wether under load or with truck out of gear (its a standard).

 

Doesnt sound like a driveshaft/u-joint issue to me. Sounds more like a loose suspension componenet somewhere issue.

 

Thanks all for your help. I found it! stabilizer bar mount where it mounts to the lower control arm was broken 37.00 and a pair of wet jeans from laying in the snow and im ready to go!
