Popular Mechanics Full Size Pickup tests...and the winner is...

Popular Mechanics
March 2007
page 58

In their order from highest ranking to lowest:
1. Nissan Titan (317 HP & 385 TQ)
2. Toyota Tundra (381 HP & 401 TQ)
3. Chevy Silverado 1500 (367 HP & 375 TQ)
4. Ford F-150 (300 HP & 365 TQ)
5. Dodge Ram 1500 (345 HP & 375 TQ)

They said the reason the F-150 was far down on the list was due to the engine. The 5.4L was the lowest HP & ft/lbs TQ of them all. But they fail to look at the whole picture. There is more to a truck than just the power, just watch www.thetruthabouttrucks.com

I think it was funny that the Honda Ridgeline and Mitsubishi Raider was not even mentioned.

This is what it should be:
1. F-150
2. Dodge Ram 1500
3. Chevy Silverado 1500
4. Toyota Tundra
5. Nissan Titan

They probably made a typo. You know how it is when you are all excited about something, you tend to make mistakes. The editor probably mixed the number ONE with the number FOUR.

They must have found more to like on the Titan than HP and Torque figures, as by the P/M chart, Titan is ranked 4th.

Dyno figures are from Edmunds & Automotive News.

Anybody seen the Toyota commercial, where the Tundra is towing a 10000 lb trailer up a ramp and then down the other side. The ramp is built like a big teeter-totter. Looks impressive; but I'm guessing 4x4 and low range. I know someone with a Tundra. It's not much for hauling.

Why would you promote a Titan. Man nobody is going to buy one off them. I have only seen a couiple in the last year. An people wonder why the Big 3 are failing. Wouldnt you promote a domestic brand if your based in the United States. Geez who votes on these things foreighn people. It just boils down to the media hates the Big 3. You know if these media giants dont cool it they will pull all there advertising an there will be no more media.

The Titan and the Tundra appeal to the yuppie crowd. You know the guy that thinks he needs a pickup to carry his golf clubs to the country club; or to to get some prefab shelves from the Home Depot. Where I am, you never see either in the oil patch or on a construction site. They are just not a working truck. They both have great handing and acceleration, but soooo what. I drive a truck not a sports car with a truck body.

Titans are made in Canton, Mississippi. So far, 270,000 have been sold.

If you pay attention to almost all comparison tests for trucks, they are rated as if they were a car. The testers are also "specialists" in testing cars and don't know what is important to people who use trucks as trucks.

They also test almost everything with the largest and most powerful engine available. The results and ratings are based on the performance of the largest engine even though the great majority of vehicles purchased do not have the largest engine available.

There you go!!!! Seriously though, Ford has the best trucks but they have to have the best motor as well. I am driving my father in laws 2002 F150 occasionally this winter. It has the 5.4. granted they are better now, but that truck is a lead sled. After driving my 6.0 PSD it's like "where's the power?" The HP gap between Ford and the Tundra is getting huge. Buyers take notice with a disparity like that. Ford are you listening? WTFU.

Most road tests today are flawed, as A: The mags that test 'em, take advertising. And anyone that takes advertising, will not give a fair and honest report, for fear of losing that advertising.

and B, tests that last one or two days are worthless. The real tests are conducted daily by the 1000's of owners.
