1996 ranger throttle cable

I'm trying to find a throttle cable for a 1996 ranger 2.3 4x2, but can't anywhere except for the dealership.

Has anyone found one anywhere else? The dealership wants $90 for one, but for that i'm almost willing to repair where the cable stop popped off and call it good enough.

Yeah, but a 10 yo throttle cable is going to be just as stretched out and ready to pop as the 10 yo one that came out of there.

What happened to yours?

My 13 year old one functions perfectly fine, isn't stretched. Idle is fully closed and WOT is perfect 90 degree open.

I've seen them on eBay. You might try local shops as well...anywhere but the dealer will have them a good bit cheaper.

How can you tell if it is stretched? I have a 93 3.0 that has a cable that is very rusty.

if you get under the dashboard and look at the top of the throttle arm, where the cable goes in you can tell. You pull the pedal up away from the floor and the if the cable comes away from the pedal arm more than about 1/2" it has stretched.

Here is an off the wall fix that might work. Install a device with a set screw to eliminate the slack. What comes to mind is something like a model airplane wheel stop. Google "Dubro Dura Collar". Let us know if it works.

Well, when you consider that this thread originated in 2007, perhaps the part number was not discontinued AT THAT TIME and a dealership could actually get that genuine Ford part.
For something like that, here's what I do: Go to your local Ford dealer parts person and request the part that you want. Of course, he (or she) will tell you that it is discontinued. "Sorry, we don't have that part and we don't know of anybody in the area who does..." is the typical answer you will get. Then, politely ask them for the part number that they were looking for. If you are on good terms with them, they will give you the part number. Take that part number and start entering it into your favorite search engine, ebay or somebody who specializes in discontinued Ford parts, such as Green Sales. Perhaps someone has one sitting on a shelf just waiting for you to buy it.
At this time, you are not in the position to dicker on the price.
