2006 F150 Electronic Brake Controller

2006 F150 Electronic Brake Controller

Hi folks,

I'm embarrased not to understand this, but have come to you guys for advice. I may be using the wrong terminology but I'll try to get my points/questions across.

I have a new F150 4x4. I am also buying a 14ft tandem trailer with brakes. The truck came with electronic trailer brakes, so I am told. I have a small bag with a wiring harness about 14" long and a trailer tow relay switch/plug.

I'm trying to decypher the installation instruction from Ford. The instructions are a measley 3 page graphical story with little words. I looked under the dash of my new 150 and I see where to plug the one end of the wiring harness into the molded 6-way gray wiring connector. But I have no idea what to do with the wire-cut ends of the harness. Is there some device I still need?

Thanks in advance for all the help.

You still need to get a break controller. Then you wire the pigtail into it and plug it in under the dash. The relay plugs into the fuse panel in the passenger floor kick panel.
Some guys mount them under the dash. I mounted mine here so I can reach it if I need to.

Outstanding. I finished researching the different types of controllers. I decided to purchase the TEKONSHA PRODIGY BRAKE CONTROL v2.6 FORD 94+ HARNESS. Looks pretty simple to install now that I understand all the pieces.

Thanks again for your quick reply and helpful information.

If you purchase the prewired harness for your particular truck, all you have to do is plug one end in under the dash and the other end into the Prodigy and you are all done except for mounting the unit. That saves you from having to do the wiring.

Yup. Sure did. The model I bought comes with the prewired harness for most modern trucks. Although I received a wire-cut harness with my Ford, the premade harness from the controller's manufacturer will be handy.

Thanks again for all the help.

Good choice on the Prodigy. I have a gallery with some pics of where I mounted my brake controller (Prodigy). Like whitecrystal1, I also wanted to mount it where it was reachable, but I don't have the console like he does. Lots of people mount them under the dash, but if you need to use the manual lever, you'll hit something while you're trying to find it!

Has the dash angle been a problem with operation? I ask because the Prodigy specifies an angle less than 70 degrees (including any vehicle angle/grade), while I measure the dash at ~65-67 degrees. I mounted mine below the dash, but really wanted it higher for the reasons mentioned above.

No problem with the angle on mine, but mine has a lever (dial) on the side to offset the angle. I think you'll be fine with yours as well.

If you don't have the console, check my gallery, there's about zero angle where I put it. It's still within easy reach, but out of sight unless you look real hard.

Ferguson65,
I thought about that location as well. It is currently mounted below the dash on the left side attached to the metal plate located there. Not the most convenient, but no real problems either.

I used that for my hidden "deactivation" switch for my driving lights on the bullbar. Since I don't have them wired "legally".
