Found a '56 F600 flatbed locally with what the owner thinks is a very tired 272, I could pick this truck up fairly cheap. Is there a later model engine that will bolt up directly to the stock trans or is it necessary to stay within the Y-block family?

I am putting a 1960 292 in my 55. All the Y-blocks will bolt right up.


And no, you have to stay with a Y-block but there's nothing wrong with a Y-block!

I had my 29 rebuilt to include balancing, porting and an aftermarket cam.
It's also going to have slightly higher comp ratio. I expect it to run pretty nice.

i have bought a few F500/600 trucks that have had both 302 and 351 clevelands fitted in place of the Y block, i like the look of a Y block, but clevelands seem to be cheaper HP and more redaly available, after 3 years of trying to find a factory 4 barrell manifold for the y block i'm no better off, even though u trip over cleveland ones.

I put a 390 in my 1956 F600 after the y-block expired. I was gonna leave the original trans. However, the 390 came with a 4 speed. Putting the 390 in was pretty simple. Aftermarket crossmember engine mounts, modified trans crossmember. Lengthen the clutch rod and convert the throw out arm from a push style to a pull style. Best conversion I've ever been a part of.

 

I'm pretty sure the 317 Y-block was an option. You can use 317 parts to fit a Lincoln 368 into that chassis. Otherwise, you might look for a 361/391 FT engine with the bellhousing mounts. That should be a pretty good swap.

 

317 Y? I thought 272 292 312. In any case, keep the Y!!! It's a great engine. Scrape, I happen to have 2 factory 4-barrel intakes for the Y, and 3 2 barrel intakes. =)))) It's a great looking engine, especially if you have ram horn exhaust manifolds. =)

i have'nt tried state side, a lot of farmers down here swapped the 4 barrel manifolds for two barrel's, so most have gone for scrap, if all else fails i'll get a moon manifold with a pair of there cast tappet covers

The truck is pretty much complete except for the driver side hood hinge and the driver's door window is missing. Also has some kind of tommy-lift hydraulic set up out back.

The engine and trans are still there but the probably needs a rebuild. But since I haven't heard it run and I'm just going by what the owner says maybe it just needs rings.

My initial thought was a 360\390 swap. What's the top speed on this size truck? It would be nice if it could do about 65mph.

 

With my 56 F600 and the 390 I swapped in 65mph is no problem to do. about 3300 rpm though. Wound a little tight for me, but she''ll do it all day long. I've seen the high side of 75 once just to see, plenty fast in that big old truck!
