Fixed my P0442 code today

I replaced my evap canister purge valve & put in 2 new charcoal canisters too. The truck is 10 yrs old & wanted it fixed good. I had a smoke test ran & found the purge valve leaking.I've had many problems with the evap system on this truck. In fact its been about the only trouble except normal maintence. The last time it had a evap code the fuel senser in the tank shorted & it also fried my ecu. Does anyone else have as much trouble with this system as I have? I know I've had at least 10 different issues with mine.

Usually it's the Vent Solenoids that go bad. They get sand or dust in them and get stuck open. I've seen pressure sensors go too.

It was the fuel pressure senser in the tank that went last. It fried my ecu. I think I've replaced the vent solenoids already.I replaced the fuel filler lines last yr. It cracked where the gas cap seats. I've replaced so much on this system I've lost track. This truck sits up a lot & I think thats a lot of my problems. I've only driven it 15,000 miles in the last 3 yrs. Its still cheaper to repair it than to buy a new one. Its still nice & clean with only a couple of dents.

I found the small/short rubber hoses running between the EGR tubing & EGR postion sensor (drivers side), had deteryated & has holes in them. I havent driven it yet to see if that fixed it but where is the evap canister purge valve & charcoal canisters located? How about the Vent Solenoids?

That particular hose won't have any effect on the evap system since it's part of the EGR system.

The canister and vent solenoid are located under the the bed of the truck.

The purge valve is located under the hood, driver's side. Look for the green capped service port.

(My service engine light came on) I had a P0442 code come up on the scanner, so I disconnect the battery to clear the code. I drove it alittle & the light came back on. I found, a few days later & replaced the small hoses to the EGR position sensor, disconnect the battery to clear the code & have so far have drove 192 miles without the light coming back on. Im still waiting to see if it will.

It can take days or even weeks for the EVAP Running Loss Monitor to run, especially in the winter as the test will not run at all if the ambient temp is below 50F.

It then requires two consecutive test failures to turn on the SES/CEL lamp.

In other words, don't get too excited just yet.

Ok theres like 11 pieces of rubber hose run throughout this evap system & the ones under the truck look like a pain in the butt to get to. This is not counting the very small vaccum hose that comes off the intake.

hoses in this system
ruff measurements
1ea 1/2'
2ea 1'
2ea 1-1/2'
6ea 3"
