I may have put this in the wrong section but....it pertains to all 67 - 72 and earlier Ford F250 4x4's after 1959. Why the heck do all the major parts stores, show F250's having a Dana/Spicer 21 transfer case? Everyone knows that the Dana 21 was a single speed case used in the F100 4x4 trucks and the Dana 24 was a 2 speed unit, used in F250's until sometime in '73 when it was replaced by the NP205. Why doesnt anyone list parts for this thing when there were millions of them produced between 1959 and 1972?
Does anyone out there have an exploded view of this transfer case that you can e mail me, or know of a parts store that won't look at me like I'm stupid when I ask for bearings and seals for this model? I've tried Car Quest, O Reilly and Napa. I think the main problem is their computer systems don't go back that far and the parts guys are too lazy to dig out an old book.

Me too. I just bought a 71 F-250 that has the dana 24. It also needs new seals and bearings.

 

Well, finally some good news.... Here are some part numbers... just a partial list... Input Shaft Bearing is a 307L... The input shaft seal is a National 470898 and the shifter shaft seals are National 6835 S . I'll post the other seals and bearings as soon as I get the info. I located them at Car Quest after talking to the former owner of 30+ years and he found an old book from several years back.

 

I found that Napa strangely enough has Dana model 24 bearings, seals, and gaskets. I'm currently checking into this myself to repair my 1970 F250 4x4 highboy which has a dana 24.

 

I'm not lazy, I'm using books, not a computer system, and here is what I found.

From 1959 thru 1964, the Ford Parts Truck Book lists exactly ONE transfer case for both the F100's and F250's. This is the Spicer # 205.

There is no reference to either a Spicer 21 or Spicer 24 Transfer Case from 1959-1964 in the Ford parts book.

From 1965 thru 1972, there are two different transfer cases listed. One is a variation of the previous Spicer transfer case (Spicer # 205), another is made by Rockwell Timken.

From 1973 thru 1979 both the older Spicer transfer case (#205), and the New Process Transfer Case were used.

You can email me directly from FTE, with your transfer case parts requests. I will need the usual: Year, transmission type, whether its an F100/F150 or a F250. I can scan the parts illustrations and the parts lists and send them back to you.

Wow thanks for the information. I was able to get a complete rebuild kit from Dana Spicer. I'm not sure what the Ford books say, but Dana recognized the transfer case as a Dana model 24 and sent my mechanic the correct parts within a day. I don't recall a "spicer 205", but hey I know different parts are referred to in different ways depending on the book and the manufacturer. Again thanks for the homework, any information pertaining to old Fords is always valuable.

I have a 64 F100 and it has an origanal model 24 tranfer case in it!

 

Questions here are both old and new. There seems to be debate over when and how the spicer 21 & 24 was used. Contrary to many ford manuals the spicer 24 has been used in ford trucks since the late 50s. They first went into ford trucks as a dealer add on.
My book says the 24 was used until 1972. The spicer 21 run until 1976 and can be found in F250s with a 390 and an NP435. My book shows the 205 was not used until 1973.
In many parts manuals the parts for the Spicer 24 are mixed in with the listings for the spicer 20. The best manual for finding the spicer 24 parts numbers is actually the Mitchell Manual. Better exploded views of spicer 24 parts can be found in most Motors Truck Repair Manuals.

 

Behind a NP435/1356 set up, with a moderately potent diesel, say 300/700 for hp/tq, would the 24 make a good range box?

 

Generally speaking the Spicer 24 is a fairly good box. Gears seldom fail, they are comparable to the 205 but that is where the strength in the 24 ends. The 24 does not have bearings to support a lot of torque. All but the input bearing are the same as you would find in a pinto 3 speed. The front shaft is sometimes prone to excessive wear on the slider splines. If you use it with a high torque diesel I would recommend you replace the weak standard 207 bearings with the high torque bearings. They are very easy to replace but can cost a little unless you find a good deal. The 207L from BCA or timken are El-Cheapo stock bearings that will not survive more than 50,000 miles with a 240 6 banger.

I have a 59 f100 that has a spicer 24. Growing up I was told that Ford made 1/2 ton trucks and 3/4 ton trucks, etc, but they also had f100 heavy half listings. I do know that the spicer 24 was delivered to my dad with the 24 in it, it has never been replaced. Anyone have any input on this transfer case linked up to a 4bt cummis approx 120 hp/300ftlb torque?
