Today on a visit to Freedom Diesels in Hemet, Ca., I witnessed powerstroke/cummins swap in a late-model ford excursion. A representative from FordCummins was on hand to install a kit that will convert any generation ford truck or excursion over to cummins power. What a neat idea. I'm sure some individual has done this before, but not as alternative product to the market.Has anybody had experience with this? Might be good option for somebody with an problematic 6.0 or rare 7.3?

 

In my recent Diesel Power mag, there was an OBS Stroker that was converted to a cummins running over 900HP.

 

Yup I saw that too. Man he blew some smoke, huh?
A guy I know in Colorado is in the midst of doing this, I want to say his is a 97, pretty early. I think the engine, installed, with some gear work he's also having done is running him about 11 grand. Obviously theres a good deal more involved than dropping it in and tightening the bolts.

 

this past April at Dyno Days, there was an OBS f-2 or 350 with a cummins in it. also there was a newer body style f-350 with a massively modified cummins in it. modified to the point where he was injecting so much fuel before the boost came on, you could hear fuel knock, on the verge of hydrolocking. however he blew a boot off and didnt make a good run. that's a shame. i have some pics of the rig for those interested.


oh and Mad Dog, the truck with the 945 hp Fummins. what a beast. that thing rolled some smoke. i bet when the run was done, charcoal briquets were rolling around on the ground.

 

Seems silly to me. I guess if you just have to have a 900 horsepower motor then it's the only way to go, but it certainly isn't cost effective. By the time you spend a couple of grand on a used 12 or 24 valve motor, and a couple of grand on the conversion kit, you still have to put a grand's worth of mods on it to get it to the power level of the stock PSD it replaced. Tens of thousands more if you want that 900 horse mill.

Moved to general diesel.

 

I guess some people think spending thousands of dollars on a engine to get big power numbers boosts their EGOs.

 

To others it's just senseless fun

 

Senseless fun?? Well, alright. What could be more fun that sitting next to a vette at a stop light and totally smoke it with an 8000 lb diesel work truck. I gotta say, it's WAY fun!! And yeah, probably senseless too, but oh well.

The guy who did my trans had a truck in his shop he was converting to a cummins, it was a obs. He said it was gonna be aroudn 800HP. He was gonna bring it to a truck pull but it blew the input shaft on it just before.

 

the cummins swap is a very clean job and many have done it. so far for me it's only been a 4 cylinder into a chevy 1500 and it's very nice and clean useing a adapter plate bell houseing that uses the stock 4r700 trans and all the stock cummins starter motor parts. i have done a tech gallery that has 3 shots of how the chevy looks with the cummins.
we are also finishing up on the same motor model into a ranger so far that also is very clean to install useing the kits it's almost done now and is driveable at this time. the 5 inch exhaust is being the problem right now .that is because i need to find some one who can bend the pipe or weld me up what i need from stock bends

 

Unless it has failed, I don't see the point in switching from the PSD to a Cummins though, but it is not entirely unusual. Some of it is about simplicity, but I personally can't justify pulling a working and running motor just to put another of the similar type in.

 

When my motor goes out im gonna go cummins powered.

 

Some reasons people want to do the swap:
1) Whether or not you like Dodge doesn't matter, the Cummins is a great engine. Ford body wrapped around a Cummins engine is a great combo.

2) The power ability of a Cummins is more than you can get out of PSD's at the moment. Sorry but it's the truth. The strongest PSD's out there right now still are behind the Cummins group. There's just a bigger aftermarket for the 5.9L, so the racers and pullers are flocking to the Cummins more than the PSD's.

 

Is it true or not. cummins leaving dodge. Toyota getting cummins. Ford and chevy getting together. I dont mean to stir the pot but this is what i have herd. Please help
