hilton head suggestions- local haunts

OK fte brothers and sisters, heading to Hilton Head SC in April and would appreciate any guidance you can offer for decent affordable places to eat.
Off the beaten path places, off island places, will even travel within 50 or so miles for a good meal and to take in the local flavor.
Any kind of food will do and kid friendly and adult only (read romantic) suggestions are what I need.
Thanks in advance and if any of you are travelling to the New England/Boston or north of area I would be glad to offer some suggestions to you.
Thanks again.

Hey V X,
wish I could help, but Charleston is the closest I've ever been to Hilton Head, and its about 100 miles north. I can recommend pretty much anywhere in Charleston. Just go and have a good time

I am in Beaufort, been to Hilton Head a few times. I dont like driving that way do to the hellish traffic. Savannah,ga is a great place to go thats outside of HH. Beaufort even has alot of great opitions. Let me know what exactly you are looking for and I can help. Savannah is a second home to me.

Thanks for chiming in Davidsca and sifon187,
Been to Charleston and loved it, Bowens Island for oysters, Cosmic Dog, and a couple of BBQ places that I can't recall the names of and a fish place at Shem Creek.
Savannah is certainly an option as is Beaufort. Just looking for places the locals go to away from the so called tourist areas. I find that off the beaten path is way more fun than following the crowd. Any kind of food will do but this northern boy needs a good fix of BBQ and ribs and brisket with all the fixins', local seafood, I'm game for anything.
Thanks again

I'm not sure where it is in Hilton Head but the Conch Cafe is a great place to eat....its not near as expensive as most HH resturants and it is great for some local seafood. Haven't been down to Hilton Head in a while, hope you enjoy yourself...it will sure cost enough.

Alas, Bowens is no longer. Had a little fire a couple weeks ago. Hopefully they will rebuild!

I've read about Conch Cafe, probably give it a go.
I guess I'll have to go back to Bowens if they rebuild to write on the wall again.
Never be able to recreate that ambiance though.

Thanks and keep the ideas coming.

So are there any other suggestions?
Also, not to hi-jack my own thread, does South Carolina have a state income tax and/or a state sales tax? Are property values still going up up up?
Thanks

There is a state income tax as well as sales tax. I believe the sales tax is 5.5% and generally a local on top of that (Charleston County is 6.5%.)

Real Estate is continuing to rise, though not like it was a year ago. There is a ton of affordable housing in the Charleston area and things are turning to a "buyers market."

Come north a little bit to Beaufort and try Big Joe's or Duke's for BBQ.

Hilton head has alot of less than great places to eat. Most places there are inside the resorts not open to the public. One of the best places open to the public is a crab house located on the north east section of the island on the waterway, Everyone knows its name just ask.....
