I've had my garage up for almost 5 years now and have rearranged the storage and shelves and boxes about 10 times now. I would like to see some pics of some storage and floor plan set up some of you guys have.

In a nutshell, along one side wall I have 18" deep shelves floor to ceiling made of 2x4's and 1" thick oak plywood that was leftover from when the house was built in 1941 and convienently in storage in the attic and garage. Part of the shelving stores car parts (including engines, transmissions, and a corvette suspension) as well as tools that I haven't made stands for yet like my table saw.

In the center of the two bay garage, I built a 4' high wall down the center, so my workshop is officially one bay rather than two, since my wife wants to put her car in the other bay once I clean that out.

Anyway, enjoy the pictures and writeups. Being organized is a good thing. One thing I will suggest is buy, or make, stands for all your larger tools rather than putting them on workbenches. This way you can wheel them away from the side to the middle of the garage, work with them, and push them back out of the way, leaving your workbenches free for stuff you'd need a workbench for.

Ha ha. At the time I wrote that page I didn't realize how close you are to me Tom!

The foot is better, I'm starting to drive a little... actually heading up to west orange for a job interview in about 30 minutes.

I have to say, it's tough to smoke, drink coffee, shift, and push the accelerator with a cane though... glad my alignment is good as I don't have enough hands to steer

 

I'd draw your garage to scale, Then makeScale cardboard cutouts of large equiptment, Easier than actually moving it

 

All those cabinet pics and talk of things like Corvette suspension just sitting around make me feel inadequate. But here goes.

Since the city will only let you build so much on the lot, I ended up with a 30 x 20 three car garage, with a small garden closet approx 4x4, and 4x14 approx tool room/shop. I'm still working on the building, but my last set of ideas (other than this thread) was my cousins 3 car garage.

I am going to use my metal cabinets along the walls in front of the parking area. I have a couple of benchs, one in the room, one in front of the cars. On the walls, I am going with 1/4 HD pegboard just about everywhere I can hang it.

I have a 10' wall with open ceilings, so some high shelves, maybe enclosed above the pegboard.

I was going to put in a "second story" through about 1/3rd of it, but the wife says go with the shelves and metal cabinets first, and then throw away as much as I can, and then see. I think she saw my collection of Honda motorcycle engine bolts and old bicycle innertubes...

It's funny how fast a building fills up.....
