E4OD problems help with troubleshooting please

I searched for a while but could not find my problem.

When cold the transmission works perfect.

When warm; the transmission shifts perfect with light throttle. At 1/4 to 1/2 throttle it slips between all gear shifts. When shifting it just kind of hangs there then lunges into gear. It is worse at the 2-3 shift. At full throttle it shifts fine. Once it is in a gear it does not slip and pulls fine. On the highway it pulls fine you would never know there is a problem. Some times right before it shifts into the next gear the rpms will jump up very quickly before shifting in solidly seemingly like it goes into neutral for a brief second.

Any ideas? I have no maintenace records.

Mine acted just like yours right b4 it went south.
Do the easy stuff first. Check oil level (hot), change the ATF & filt. Take it to a tranny shop, most will scan it for free.

You might want to try a sonax/tricumulator kit if you change the ATF/fiter. It helped fix the 'hanging' shifts. Search this site for sonax, you'll find a couple sponsors that sell the kit.

Did yours go south too? Is there any since in trying the sonnax?

Was there any good warning before it took a dump?

Mine to was acting up like that and then went south on us during a trip. We just got it back from the rebuild - now the rear end of the suburban, 1/2 ton, we used to tow back the trailer (over it;s limit) is starting to whine and I had to replace a pinion seal, and maybe now who knws what else.

Yes. Mine took a dump too. You might try it, or you might be prolonging the agony. Did you take it in for a scan?

I don't mean to sound like gloom and doom, but my e4od acted very similar before it failed. I suggest pulling the pan and checking for metal. If it's starting to come apart and you continue to drive, you could possibly damage the case. It's not cheap to repair one right, and not just any shop can do it well. If you go for a reman unit avoid Phoenix. If you can afford it you should check out some of the premium units that are available.

I just made a 1,000 mile round trip with the truck empty. The transmission is acting the same. I am going to pull the pan either tomorrow or Monday. I need to face the facts. The transmission has 200k on it. I do not know the history of the truck but it looks like the original. There is no indication at that it has been out. I am preparing to rebuild or buy one. If I can swing I will get a transmission from a supporting vendor.

If I need to which is better; A Ford reman or a Jasper reman? I am new to Huntsville and I do not know of anyone reputable for a rebuild.

My info that I was able to get when I was checking around here in Colorado was to stay away from the Ford remans if possible - too many were failing with those I checked on here in Denver. I landed at Detroit Transmission specialists and am glad I did. They did a full rebuild and update, cheaper than purchasing a new one or rebuild with a three year warranty - nation wide - I ran mine fully loaded over the Rky mountains this past week and it ran better than it has before.

My tranny was $2089, but, I removed & installed it.

Had all high performance parts put in including:
New steel 6 pinion planitaries (front & rear)
New solenoid pack
ect, ect.....

New aftermarket (local guy) 4r100e HD converter, not reman.

I had a reputable (e4od) rebuilder do the labor $350.

Man what a difference!
I love it, but haven't towed yet, can't wait tho.

$2500 on mine, total rebuild, with Updates, Tugger Kit and custom torque converter that they ahve built and welded up on thier own - they did it all, I just had it dropped off and then picked it up. A rebuit was $2,800 plus labor ($3,500 at the Ford dealership). At the shop they ahd a dealership delievery F250 that had shelled out the Ford rebuild that the dealership had placed in it for themselves - whcih they proply had to have the company I was using pull and rebuild the right way and reinstall). so far I am really pleased - we took it out this weekend again and it shifted like a charm
