I now own an 05-6.0 F-350, srw, crewcab. This is my second Ford diesel and my first a 7.3 F-250 ran great. The ride, steering, and towing are much better in the new truck. I have two concerns, the truck has twice gone dead while driving on the freeway, no load, with the cruise control on. The first repair at the ford dealer in Calif. couldn't find any problems, they replaced the main breaker and the truck ran fine. The second time I was in Colo. driving with no load, cruise control on, and the truck went dead again. Same problem. The tech couldn't find any problem, Ford told him to replace the FICM, new main breaker and it runs fine. Has this happened to others, and what is the fix? My second issue is the turbo tube blowing off. Is there a better clamp or a fix for this?

 

I don't know about the truck just dying. I have an 06 F250 and that hasn't happened to me. On the turbo tube blowing off if you look through some of the older letters you'll find one on that. I can't remember how old it is. The tech folder at the top of the forum might have something also. Do your clamps have the screw tighteners on them?

Regarding the dieing, I'm not sure if the '05's have had wire chafing problems. Maybe someone else can chime in here about that.

 

One of my buddys has an 05 250 like mine and his did the dying thing several times. He would just be driving down the highway and it would die. Ford couldn't find anything wrong with it even with the black box monitoring it. They replaced an injector and that didn't fix it. They replaced the fuel pump and apparently that took care of it. The problem was random in nature and they couldn't get it to happen for a long time. Finally, a mechanic was using it to run an errand and got stranded. According to them, it never threw a code.

 

Could it be a wire chaffing issue. My 03 would do a simmilar thing right after I got it and they found that the wiring harness that runs around the steering column would short out on the sterring colunm.

 

You may want to check the underhood fuses (#15 and #18) per this notification from Ford:

2005 F-Super Duty trucks built before 5-11-05 may exhibit various electronic-related symptoms due to loose/miss-installed fuses in the engine compartment fuse box. These symptoms may be intermittent. The fuses should be inspected to verify they are installed into the terminals in the fuse box and not along side the terminals.

Thanks for all the input, both on the truck dying issues and the turbo tube. In reading all the sugestions it seems that the turbo tube will get oil in in it after some miles and then come off. I have also heard that the turbo can stick which over pressures the system and blows off the tube. In both cases the fix is to remove the tubes, clean and re-install. My local dealer won't change the turbo out without a stuck one. If you can show that the turbo is stuck then you get a newer one. The mystery dying could be a wire chaffing problem, but no codes thrown and no evidence found by the dealer. Fords recc. was to replace the FICM which they did. I will post more info when I find out more. Thanks for the help.

 

i have only replaced 1 ficm where as at least 8 or 9 harnessess

Lynn: On my truck: The tech started the truck grabbed the wiring harness under the stering column and wiggled it and the truck died instantly. He did it several times and then knew that it was the cause. Keep in mind mine is an 03 and i believe they had quite a few of the 2003's with the same problem.

 

Somewhere on these pages there are pics of possible wiring chafing locations. I was just looking at them earlier this week and of course can not find them now. Maybe someone will remember.

But, a knowledgable tech would know about them.
