oil dipstick location

oil dipstick location

ok i have most of my engine put back together but i cant for the life of me find where the oil dipstick goes. so if anybody know or even better has a pick of where the dipstick on a '85 6.9 is please post back soon i want to drive my truck today.

uh on the left hand side of the engine. it goes into the top of hte oil pan and there isa bracket that bolts to the top of the valve cover.

cool i got it in now i just need to find the location for a few wires. theres the two that go on top of the injection pump one is red the other yellow, i think the red one goes in front. and the other is a black conector with two round conectors in it. it comes out of the group of wires for the alternator. the plug is about as big around as a quarter

Somebody correct me if im wrong, but I think its for a scanner. Its an OBD I tester, they plug in to 2 or 3 different plugs (not like the newer ones that plug into the under-side of the dash). It looks pretty dirty, like it hasn't been plugged in for a while.

Just my $0.02....and its probably wrong

ok well closer and farther away now, i got the fuel lines an wires and everything conected. unfortunatly i have an odd water leak now
the pan under the intake filled up with water and the pocket where the glow plugs are. i drained and filled the radiator a few times and i cant find any leak.
there is some that comes up from the #2 glow plug between the head and intake but im not sure if thats just coming up from the pan under the iontake or if the water is coming out of the head there. so its either leaking up from somewhere i cant see like a water hose i cant see or the head is really messed up.
also the #3 injector there is some fuel bubling up around the threads by the head and it is tightened. and a little bubling up around the glow plug there but the glow plugs wernt all tightened down. what size socket? or whats a good wat to get em in good? this whole truck is just full of problems im actually thinking of taking it it to a shop. would be the first time since i bought my first car in 01

The plug you have in the pictures is for the tach pickup. The wiring is in the harness even if you do not have a tach.

There are no water passages in the intake manifold, but there are water passages in the heads that are blocked by the intake manifold and valley pan gasket.

How far down did you have the engine?



I did not have a picture of where it went into the block right above the oil pan.

It would be right above and behind the starter, be careful to get the O ring seated in the block sleeve.

i did manage to get the dipstick in thanks, i have the engine prety much put back together. so there are open water pasages in the intake side of the head? so do i have to take the intake off or something to seal it up?

There are water passages in both the block and in the heads that are close to the area where you are having your leak.
The heads block the ones in the block.
The valley pan gasket blocks the ones in the heads.

Either could be the source of your water.

originally it was because it was running very poorly, no power and blowing air out the intake. the original owner thought it was a burnt valve. i pulled the driver side head off and it had a 1" hole in the head gasket between #4 and #6 cylinders. i pulled the other head and had them checked out. they both had cracks so i got them replaced and now im trying to make it work again. hopefully i will be able to get the intake off and fix it within a few days i had planned on driving it next wekend

yesitsall in the truck exept for the machining of the heads. i got theintake pulles and the valley pan cleaned out. couple inches of solid much and greasy oily much. i could have grown vegetables if it wernt patrolium based. im goign to put it all back together tomorrow and hopefully it starts

When you are looking at the heads do you see the coolant passages?
Did the gasket look like it was leaking there?
When you installed the heads, were the block and heads both completely clean and oil free?
Also are you sure you did not dislodge one of the rubber inserts in the head gaskets?

One single spot of oil on the block or head can cause gasket failure if it is in the right place. I wiped mine down with acetone to make sure they were oil free before I installed the gaskets and head.

yup i got the headgasket install done all good. i finally got it all back together, but after i got the intake off i looked at the coolant passages on the intake side of the head and the valley pan and that is where it was leaking from. it still doesnt start but it could be lack od battery power and air in the fuel lines still. so i'm goign to play with it more tomorrow with some light.
