Can someone give me the pros and cons of the two. I have heard one common-sense statement of "If you have one diesel, convert it, If you have lots of diesels, convert the WVO." My father-in-law and I are the only diesels in the family, so I wonder if the wvo route may be better for me.

 

Your statement is correct and pretty much the first question to ask yourself when trying to decide which way to go.

Other questions are how much driving do you do. Is you truck used for commuting, is that commute further then 20 miles one way. Do you drive cross country or long distances on a frequent basis. If the answer is yes to these and no to the multi diesel vehicle question then WVO may be the right choice.

If on the other hand you drive short trips allot then Bio making may be your only answer.

It will take me about 35-40K miles to break even on my conversion. I'm doing this mostly 62 miles a day. If I could drive 600 miles a day the break even point would be way shorter.

 

How much does it cost to do the conversion to the truck to run WVO? Is there a website that I can go to with directions for building the conversion? I fall into the category of longer commutes and trips. Are the benefits of running wvo the same as running biodiesel...higher lubricity, etc? Thanks for the help.

I do not necessarily agree with that concept for a couple of reasons:

First the cost of converting your truck vs building an Appleseed Processor favors the Appleseed (you can make one for about $250 if you are a good scrounger)

Second production cost favor WVO (WVO very small, filters etc, and BD about $.75 to $1.00 per gal)

Third converting your truck may limit your customer base if you want to sell it in the future.


I am not advocating for one or the other simply pointing out some factors that may affect your decision. Do good thorough research before you choose onr or the other.

 

Well, I definitely dont intend on selling the BD, mainly just for my and my father-in-laws use. It would be more of a hobby than anything, lets just say that Willie Nelson is my hero. Thanks for the input, anyone else with with opinions are greatly appreciated.

 

When I said "sell it" I was refering to your truck.
Most of us dont sell our BD because of the liability aspects.

He is very knowlegeble on the topic of WVO and has the latest and greatest conversion equipment available

 

Each truck is some what differant. These prices assume you are doing the install yourself and are rough estimates

If you have a really early pre PSD truck you can convert for about $700 if you buy a kit or probably less then $300 if make all your own parts.

A new 6.0 PSD will be closer to $2800 for a kit and tank. I don't recommend a home made system for this truck unless you spend a bunch of time researching.

Wow, so I'm assuming a 7.3 is on the higher end of that scale as well. I was already leaning towards Biodiesel, now I think it is definitely the way to go. BTW, I dont think I will ever sell this truck, at least thats my intent, but I guess you never know what could happen. Anyways, I think Bio-D is the way to go for me, so now I know where to focus my research at least. Thanks.
