I have a 90 7.3 and I am going to change the return lines on it. I have heard that bio diesel ruins rubber so what should I use to replace these lines?

 

I have heard that bio diesel only degrades natural rubber. I would assume that fuel lines are made of a synthetic rubber, so I don't feel it should be an issue. But that's just me.

 

Buna-n is a synthetic rubber and will soften just like natural rubber. You need to use Viton fuel lines to be safe.

This is something I'd like to know about then, becuase I would like to try WVO next summer (just don't have time this year, and the vehicle doesn't have many places to go). I have mostly metal lines still, but some lengths between components I have replaced with rubber because the metal lines could not stand the vibrations. It was recommended by the local store to use transmission line, so that is what they sold me, and so far, for normal diesel, it has worked just fine. Will WVO degrade this stuff? I'm sorry if you've already given your answer...I'm just not familiar with what "Buna-n" is.

 

Addition: I just looked "Buna-n" up and apparently this type of rubber degrades with highly oxidized fuels. I would assume that transmission lines are made of this?

 

Yes, and it isn't good with biodiesel.

Nitrile is a rubber too, read this. Nitrile is degraded by Esters also.

I am having trouble finding viton the auto parts store cant even order it

 

I went to my local auto cool shop and he had Viton "O" rings. They were green in color. I think they are used in the new R-134A AC units.

You can get viton o rings from any hydraulic repair shop. They use them when extreme temp and pressure are to be used. They are usually brown in color.

 

The Bus Boy, asked if when he uses WVO,will rubber lines be OK,as I read the post after his guestion,all remarks were still for BioDiesel.

Please clarify, If I and Bus Boy are going to run "WVO" ,Will the rubber fuel lines be OK.

Just got threw reading Planet Drives recomendations for WVO fuel lines, they recomend Gates XL fuel lines for there conversions, I am running Gates at this time.

FYI, I am up in the Cooperstown area, I plan on comming down to the Giant scale Model Airplane event next weekend at the Chenango Bridge Airfield. I plan on camping there Fri. and Sat. evening.

I have 2500+ miles on WVO at this time.
