The ignition lock has pins that line up when the key is inserted, allowing the lock to turn (like any lock). When the pins wear out, sometimes you can turn the lock without the key.

replace ignition lock.

Been there, done that with my cousins van

Spend the $15 at a junkyard if you have too, but being stranded because the ignition doesnt work absolutly sucks

Here's some info on how to do it.

http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBr...3d800a9e94.jsp

I got a new one from the Ford dealer with a new set of keys for about $14.00 a few years ago. Your new keys will not match the doors, but if you are worried about this(I just carry both keys), you can get a locksmith to make the door locks match the new ignition keys.

It would be easier and cheaper to match ignition cyl to current key.
A locksmith should have an 'uncoded ' ignition cyl. and set it to his key. Or they can use a switch already combinated, overlapping the cuts and giving him a new key but still work doors and ign.
Just find a locksmith that has a walk in shop instead of mobile service only, that way there is no service call

Once you get the ignition replaced make sure that you don't have 50 lbs of crap om your key ring, that is what causes the pins to wear out like yours have. Yes, with time from putting the key in and taking it out you will wear the pins down, but its the extra weight on the key ring that ***** the key and accelerates the wear.

on that year it is a common problem for the "ears" on the ignition to break. when that happens sometimes the ignition cylinder will turn without a key. Go to a locksmith with your key and they will key up a new cylinder to your key. That is the best way to fix it and it's not very expensive.
