New muffler on 68 f100/ flowmaster

What type of muffler would be the best for my truck. I have a 68 f100 360cid 2wd. I am looking at the flowmaster 40 series. There about $60 a piece, and i need 2. Also, do these mufflers actually increase horsepower and mpg. Basically i want that cool deep muffler sound. Any suggestions on how to do this cheap? thanks.

I say go with the 60 series flowmaster with 2.5 inlet/2.5 outlet. I have this set up on my f100 with a 360FE and my f250 with a 302. On the 360 I'm running stock exhaust manifolds and it still sounds like a monster!!!! My 302 has headers, and man it sounds great!! I get excited everytime I start either of my pickups up. Want a nicer sound? Add a mild cam....LOUD + NOISY TRUCKS ARE MORE FUN!!! Ben

Forgot to add....YES they give you a little more HP (15-30 over stock) and fuel mileage, due to the low backpressure. This also helps engine last longer. If you go ahead and invest in some headers while your at it, your more likely to notice a substantial increase in HP and mileage. I priced headers for my 360 at about $125 for a decent set, but never got around to buying them.

I have a 77 F150. 460/C6. I run 2 45223 part numbers on mine. There are the 87-93 Mustang flowmasters. They are about the cheapest, due to volume sold) and sound great. I ran mine with manifolds and 2 1/4" aluminized pipe. I reciently added headers. This didn't really change the sound in the back, but you can hear the engine fire in the headers a little bit which sounds cool too.
