I have a 95 Mazda B2300 with a 5 speed manual tranny. I am currently getting about 25 MPG due to 95% of my driving is hwy. Both of my 02 sensors need replacing. Is this actually going to take my mileage higher?

Possibly, if they aren't working properly. But, you would think you would have other symptoms if this were the case. Why do they need changing? jim d

 

I have had the truck for a little over a year. The check engine light finally burnt out after about 7 months. I check the codes and clear them using a superchips programmer about once a month and everytime I do this the codes for the upstream and downstream 02 sensors are listed.

 

I owned a 96 ranger with the 2.5, it got 20mpg city and 25mpg highway. If you have the 4.1 rear end, thats the mpg you will get....period. Great truck, great hauler as I often had a 800-1000 load on mine and hauled the maple 460 miles.

 

What are the specific codes you get? They may NOT necessarily be indicative of bad O2 sensors...as evidenced by you still having rather great MPGs to this point.

 

25 mph is pretty good. I'd bet its something else.

 

I did not think 25mpg was very good. Most of the time city/highway it got 20mpg. I was pretty hard on the truck. I overloaded it twice,(2100 pound load) the drivetrain worked fine, but I hurt the suspension. $$$ Last year Ford offered me $$$ on a trade in and the F150 cost 500 dollars less than my Ranger did new back in 99. Would you say they are giving F150s away. I got the 4.2, and the MPG is bad--17mpg city/highway.

 

The codes are P0135 and P0141. Both are listed as sensor heater circuit fault for each 02 sensor. I crawled under the truck (hard to do) and found that the upstream sensor was unplugged but had the connector partial melted from laying on the exhaust. The previous owner put a clutch in it right before I bought it, must have left it disconnected.

The 25 miles to the gallon, I am satisfied. I travel 150 miles round trip to work and I bought the truck for $500 and have put 40K miles on it in just over a year.

I was just wondering if it would increase my mileage the 10% like all the shops tell you about with bad 02 sensors. If not, then I can deal with the codes being there, cause as I previously stated the check engine light no longer works.

well, I just made a 500 mile trip and got 22-23mpg........thats not bad for a 150, its even better than many minivans, and cars with the preformance 6 cylinders.

 

The O2 sensor will allow the engine to go into closed loop mode, where it gets its best mileage. You can take apart the melted connector, and just connect the wires directly to the pigtail on the O2, or you can boneyard it and clip one from a similar truck.
It should have an effect on mpg. Do that before tackling the other O2 code, as the ECM compares readings.. or it may not, 'knowing' that the upstream O2 is not functional.

Sorry.....went over to Germany and England for a couple of weeks....Just got back. I will try the connection of the wires the hard way. I also just found that it seems the fan clutch is locked up. I started the truck after sitting all night with the air temps at 72F and the fan is running right off the bat.

Thanks for the info on connecting the sensor first to see if it will bring the other one back online so to speak.
