A buddy of mine is considering popping out to Alberta to find work as a plumber/pipefitter for a season.
Do you guys have any links or leads to the "30/60/90 Day Contracts" the we keep hearing about? Are there actually those rediculously high paying jobs that separate the men from the boys out there? The rumour is that some of those jobs are so hard on a person that most local folks steer clear of them.

I haven't heard anything about contracts, but if you want to make cash get out here. My brother is a pipefitter his little company is making about $500,000 a year right now.

 

My buddy has many skills from operating an excavator to drywall to concrete to decks & patios & plumbing.
Myself, I haven't touched a dozer, loader or backhoe for over twenty years.
So, my other question is basically can an all-round construction guy still make large money as soon as he arrives in Alberta?
I saw that Dennis has concrete listed as one of his life adventures.

Yeah theres a serious labour shortage out here, if you can back what you say you can do you can be hired up almost imediately, probably best bet would be to get on with some company to start out and get your feet wet.

 

For those of you that are familiar with the Toronto/GTA construction industry, the 99 questions & doubts are the norm. From what I've seen of Calgary, Toronto is nothing short of a mad house by comparison.
Proposed ETA would be July. Ya, I know you guys get snow storms in September so hurry up. Been there, saw that.
By chance, are there regular/large companies that are "sure fire" places to contact in advance so the job will be there when you arrive?
I'll give my buddy Keith aka "Von Schkvarehead" the news & see if he wants to log on to FTE & read this thread for himself. Perhaps he'll join up as an FTE member & share his experiences with his Ford CC diesel.

If you want to get in to anything, there is a job form you right now. tim Hortons in Grande Prairie is paying $14/hr to work there. Just phone ahead, e-mail a resume they will probably check you out then tell you to hustle up & get out here. The guy who just put the new windows in my house is paying to fly in skilled help.

 

My ex-cousin in law was a contractor plumber/mechanical engineer and he seemed to fit in okay.

There are several choices in Alberta available for the positions you mention.

Have him sift through the Calgary Herald Newspaper online to see the VAST amount of job offerings.

The things offered will make his head spin.

He will also have his choice of where to work by looking at the job listings.

I will post a few online Calgary sites that also have jobs listed.

Where in Alberta would he like to work & live ?

My BIL owns a gas fitting company with interests in the Edmonton area .

He owns G&G in Ontario and does all the stuff for consumers gas from Hamilton to Ottawa.

 

I'm not 100% about a location. Von Schkvarehead will be the guy to make the trip. I'd have to say that if the "Big" job comes in, it wouldn't matter much where it is. I would like very much to fall into a great job, but that would be a little more difficult having spent the last 23 years in a tow truck. Doesn't look so good on a resume.
I haven't spent any time in Edmonton since my early childhood. I was in Calgary on vacation in 95, 96, 97 & 00. With Race City right close to town & all the culture in the residential alleys, I personally would pick Cowtown.
Ya, any links or leads to ready and willing employers that want guys with Keith's skills would be much appreciated. I'm quite sure that everyone understands how challenging it can be to move to another province.

If you are serious just about every construction company in Alberta is hiring. The careers section in any paper you pick up is a whole section on Friday. You can't miss right how.

 

Googled Calgary Herald & chose a link, then used the search feature & came up with 198 matches to the key word "construction".

All i can say is to teel your buddy to come on out, and join up, as if he does end up in cowtown we might just have to give him a welcome .
