running without a muffler?

Hey, i was wondering what are the laws here in Alberta about muffler? i was interested in doing something like the following and do not know what exactly the laws are. Do I have to have a muffler on? or is strait piped legal? Thanks for any help.

I'm sure there must be a law about mufflers, but I've never heard of anyone getting in trouble for running without one. To my ear, a truck with straight pipes is less anoying than a civis with the fart can.

Hi Twin,

It seems that most laws are municiple by-laws and each town/city is different but the Canadian law states
"Recommended Practice J986, Sound Level for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks (August 1994), or SAE Standard J1470, Measurement of Noise Emitted by Accelerating Highway Vehicles (March 1992), the exterior sound level does not exceed 80 dBA when a value of 2 dBA is subtracted from the highest average sound level recorded during the test, in the case of a light-duty vehicle."

I ran straight pipes on my 67 Baracuda for years and never received a ticket for that, lots of tickets but none for vehicle noise. I don't believe there are any laws requiring a vehicle to have mufflers it is just the noise level.

I would rather hear the roar of an engine then the thump thump thump from a stereo with to much base.

Thanks guys, i totally agree with both of you, I am not big on the bass from a stereo. Back home, I am ~ 500 feet from the road and love the sound of exhaust as people drive by. But when i can hear peoples bass INSIDE my house, that is just bad.
Thanks for your input, I might have to go talk to a cop back home about this, just to be safe.

i've been running straight pipes around calgary for a year now and never got pulled over for it. as you may know the calgary police service are worse than the gestapo, so if they will not pull someone over for it than the rcmp probably will not either.

whoops...sorry bout that Mil1ion, it did answer my question, (i was in the middle of class when i posted and was jus quickly readin it over). I was lookin at puttin on strait pipes, but maybe not, ( i don't want to do too many illegal things) I mite just have to work with flowmasters and get a good sound, i doubt i could get a good sound out of a stack if i muffler is on it. Oh well, thanks everyone for your posts, if i ever get around to doin my exhaust work i'll let ya no how it turns out. Thanks again.

What kind of truck do you have, 97 and up? The OBDII systems have four cats on them (V8's anyways) and will muffle some exhaust noise if running a straight pipe.

Okay

I have the 2nd loudest Stock exhaust system in the neighbourhood and no one says anything.
The guy with the flowmasters and K&N filter is always getting spoken to.

With a 240 6, if you get ticketed for the loudness of it, then i think we're all in trouble, but really most cops won't give a hoot about it.
