In nj dose the state reqiure you hav muffler on your car/truck. Also can the exuasht come out the side of the vehicle?

 

You need mufflers and depending on the year of your truck you may need cats. Check out the thread right after this one about emissions. It has a little more info for ya. Exhaust out the side is fine.

Thats what i ment, cuase from factory, it comes out the side from the rear.

My bronco II has cats, and there staying in. They dont bother me. I need a new muffler, and was wondering if i could go by without one. Anyway, do you know if an after market muffler (such as magnaflow, etc) would be a problem?

You would need a muffler. My exaust exits right in front of the rear tire and I never get any trouble about it. Aftermarket mufflers will be fine as long as they are not those "race only" type mufflers. I have Flowmasters on my truck and I went through inspection fine.

 

great!!, i sure hope they dont bother me about doing that with a bronco II. Im getting a sport muffler, prolly the same as stock lol. Maybe a little louder. Heck it looks cool as hell, and it beats getting a whole new tail pipe.

 

The muflers have to exit the "passenger" compartment area.... meaning if you have a bronco the have to exit via the rear of the vehicle. If you have a pick-up the mufflers can end under the bed area past the cab which is the "passenger" compartment. I ended mine one foot after my cab under the bed and put turn downs on ends of the flowmasters pointing out to the sides of the truck.

 

Someone told me it must be past the last opening window....so i may be able to do it, sence it only has the two front windows, and the rear ones are sealed.

Its stupid if it still must be past that,even though the rear window cant be opened, and the pipe is past the front opening window on the door

 

In New Jersey, the law specifically states that a vehicle shall be equipped with a muffler in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise and annoying smoke, and no person shall use a muffler cut-off, bypass or similar device upon a motor vehicle on a highway. No where have I found that the location of the tail pipe is relative to anything. Just keep in mind that if a M.V. Inspector can show that emissions are getting into the cab compartment of the vehicle, then the vehicle can be considered " unsafe" and be towed from the highway.

 

well, anyway, i gots a new thing im doing.
I ordered a LMC truck mag, and they have a pretty cool dual exuasht im getting for my birthday. Instead of mufflers, it has "resinator" tips on the end of each pipe. I guessing thats what quites it up, but leaves a mild deep tone. Its also 50 state legal, so i should pass inspection with no problems.Both pipes run out the rear of the vehicle so even if there is a law about side exhuast, it wont apply to me.

I understand that it should be on there for noise control, but dose it really control smoke to any extent? I never knew that if it dose, i always though that all smoke, and emmsions control was done via the catalitic converter, maybe you said that by mistake, current i have no muffler on my truck (sits in the yard for now, until i get a permit/license, im fixing it up) and there obsolutely no smoke other then some steam that comes out of the ehxuast

Mufflers do not control smoke. IN NJ you do need to have a muffler. It can be loud since NJ DMV does not use anything to measure noise for inspection, but they do run mirrors under the cars/trucks to make sure it has cats/mufflers. Your tailpipe should come out past rear tire on a BII as far as I know. "Must exit after last opening window". Even though side windows do not open they could give you some grief about it depending on who does the inspection. NJ is not so fun for inspection. I hate living in NJ for inspection reasons ha.

 

yeh well, i do suppose it better then california.....i heard there VERY strict, but however, im keeping both cats in my truck and im running the 50 state legal dual exhuast i talked about before.
