I had a quick question to anyone with a '77 truck in NJ. I'm looking into buying a '77 F-150, but I was wondering about emission regulations in NJ... How much do you have to worry about emissions when suping up this year? I know they require cats, but other then that, what have you been able to get away with in a daily driver? Blown 460? I figured I'd ask; I don't believe they can help me with this particular one at the MVS website or DMV .

i have q tags on my 65 falcon, 66 7 litre, and 79 F250, so i don't have to worry about inspection or the emissions bs.

 

If the vehicle had cats from the factory, you're expected to have cat-like devices mounted in the exhaust system. This applies even if your vehicle is old enough not to have emissions testing (as yours is), but you do have to pass the visual test which they swing large mirrors underneath looking for such things.

But, since there is no emissions test, they don't have to work for you to pass. So you can take your existing cats (or junkyard cats, or mufflers with cat shields over them) and hollow them out of you wish.

My answer is based on "regular tags" rather than "Q" or "Antique" tags, which often limits the mileage you can put on the vehicle.

While NJ is fairly rigorous in their emissions testing, know that my 93 F350 breezes right through with nothing other than a cat. All the EGR and fancy emissions control doohickeys are completely disabled. They sit on the engine merely for appearance.

Passes just fine.
