Is there some source to check out that shows what an original engine and it's hookup look like?? I've got a '36-85HP in my '38 1/2 ton. It's a definite rebuild bec. of the good shape it's in, has 21 studs, and is stamped 68==== on the heads. The hoses come in at the top-front of the heads and the water pumps are just below them. I've seen pic's of other '36-7-8's with hoses and pumps in various different positions. I know it doesn't matter much except for ordering eng. parts and maybe wiring. I'm mainly curious. Tks~JH~

A picture of the engine would be interesting - sounds like a 37/8 block with 36 heads. I'm curious what they did for water pipes on the front of the head where the old pumps bolted on.

There are some pics of my '38 in the gallery, not the best for the front of the motor but you can kinda see the left pump and the hoses. Didn't know the heads could be switched. Like I said, just curious mostly.

Ok Dan, I just read your first post more carefully..... thought you meant the wp's were mounted on the front of the block below the hose connections. From the picture and what you said it does appear to be a 36 engine - at least by the head designation. About the only parts question you might get is whether it has babbit for bearings or insert bearings.

All 21 stud heads will physically interchange, but you have plumbing issues if you mix them up. I have a 36 engine that is fairly complete and a 37 block that is all busted up from freeze cracks, but it came with the wp block-off plates indicating it had been used with 36 or earlier heads.
