Looking at buying a newer or new ford Pickup. These Liter engine sizes are confusing. My 94 F250 has a 5.8ltr 351 in it. Can anyone tell me what size the 5.0, 5.4 etc motor sizes are. The salesman at the ford place said that the 5.4 was a 351, what gives???

 

He's wrong, the 5.3 is 330 CI.

You mean the 5.4 is 330c.i. Also, 5.0L = 302c.i. 7.5L = 460c.i.

Most (all?) engines nowadays are primarily known by their metric displacement.

5.4 liters X (1 cubic inch/0.016387064 liters) = 329.53 cubic inches or 330 cubic inches

 

For a rough number, take the litres and multiply by 60.625. This will get you within 2ci of the common accepted displacement of that engine, as long as the manufacturer was somwhat honest on the size.

 

Some of the older metric/English designations are listed in the engine forum titles. Some of the designations were fudged just a little...

 

Litre engine size divided by 16.39 will yield cubic inch displacement.

cubic inches times 16.39 equals litres

1,000 cc's is equivalent to 61 cubic inches.

Displacement in cubic inches, bore squared X .7854 X stroke X number of cylinders.

Bore in mm's squared X .7854 X stroke in mm's X number of cylinders divided by 1,000,000 for litres.

Let's try this.
302 * 16.39 = 4949.78. That's almost 5,000 litres, that's a BIG engine!

Just take the liters times 61 will give you close enough to cubic inches.
example, my 6.8 liter V-10 is 415 cubic inches (6.8 times 61),
and my 4.6 liter Crown Vic is 281 cubic inches (4.6 times 61).
(Liters times 60, then liters times 1, and add together, and round up)

5.8 liters = 353.9377157494 cubic inches

5.4 liters = 329.5282181116 cubic inches

1 liter = 61.0237440947 cubic inches.

 

Interestingly, the Ford 5.0 (302) V-8 was really a 4.9 ,but 5.0 sounded cooler. The true 4.9 L was the 300 I-6.

 

A mental thing, Rover in 95 had a 3.9 litre V-8, in 96 it was 4.0 litre and both engines had the same bore and stroke.
To use a chart to figure engine math or litres displacement isn't a thing a true gearhead would use, like a power outage in a store, checker can't do the math. Modern times are called progress, I question that.
