What year of computer will interchange

Like title asks. I have 1987 BII with 2.9 automatic. Found a computer from a 1986 BII. Will they interchange? Thanks

If the '86 computer is from an auto, it should work just fine.

If '86 and '87 years both had the A4LD auto transmission...

Not sure if the A4LD's used a speed sensor in the tranny for both cruise control and otherwise, though (?). My '87 5-speed has a speed sensor in the tranny specifically for the cruise control, if I remember right. I don't think it has anything to do with the engine computer *shrug*

I looked at a couple of parts stores on the net and my local store to see if the two years had the same part number. They do not. According to them it would be two different computers. The one that I got was from a 1986 a4ld BII. Not sure what to do. Do I try it even though the parts store have different numbers for the two years?

Go to autozone.com and look up the wiring diagrams for both vehicles. If the pins and wires are all the same with the same sensors then you've got nothing to worry about.

Well got BII back. The torque not locking up was fixed with the new computer but now the engine does not perform like it should. My 87 computer has part# E7TF-12A650-BH1A, the 86 has part# E6TF-12A650-P2A. So I fixed one problem but caused another. At least I know what my original problem was.

What preformance problems are you having. The part number looks like it's basically the same, just some possible programing changes which would only be minor since there were no significant changes between 86 & 87.

At cruising speed, steady throttle pressure everything ok. Excelerating it act like it is running out of gas. It will search then act like it is choking on itself then surge, so on, so on. Idle is okay. Took my original and put it back in, road tested, and the engine was back to normal and the torque would not lock up. So there is definately a programming issue. My original (87) had every pin in place on the computer, the 86 has 10 pins missing.
