Just got a 93 ranger with 2.3 engine 8 plug engine and std trans,OK truck was parked 5 years ago due to it quit running while driving, so some local guys who was trying to help ran a test hot postive wire to a couple of places and it still wouldnt fire so truck was taken to a local auto shop and determined that the crank trigger system was bad, ( I think it was broken?) anyway they replaced the timing belt while in there too along with new crank sensor, but then truck would still not run, still no spark and was told that the computer or ingition module might be bad due to the test hot wire that the other guys tried on it , so the owner just left it sitting until last month when I got it from him, so I pulled out fuel pump (bad from sitting in old gas) and I replaced it with a tested good used one from salvage yard that they just started to part out, I also got the ignition module and ecu computer same part #s and year etc (salvage yard from same parts truck that ran 2 weeks ago) and installed them and still no spark , the fuel pump is working too! so I had both the ignition modules check yesterday at Autozone and both are reading good (passed on their tester) so I have cleaned all the connectors and see found NO blown fuses either, I also swithed the relays from fuel pump to the ecu relay and still no fire! so Im stumped! I have the old crank trigger too and it looks worn out or broke and I see that its got a new crank sensor on it too! could it be that the new one is bad? how can you check it or the ecu computers that I have got? any ideas? have you checked any of the grounds to make sure they are clean and tight (DIS, coils...)?

 

Yes I cleaned all the grounds that I could find and all the connections going to the electrics too!

have you checked the coils themselves. new plugs and wires? have you tried pulling the codes for a possible clue?

 

You have two coil packs on the truck. My truck is a little newer than yours, and has 3 wires going to each coil pack. The center wire has 12 volts when the key is on and the other two get grounded by the ignition module to make the plugs fire. I would check the center wires on each coil first to verify power to the coils. See what that shows and then post your results.

 

Yes they both are getting fire in the center and one of the side wires is getting fire too? also when I turn on the ignition switch the fuel pump comes on and stays on! I can feel the fuel pump relay click after the first 5 seconds but the pump continues pumping, no wires are burnt and they all look original, I have changed the computer with a known working unit and the ignition module came off the same running truck, I also had my old module and this one checked on a machine and both show good! should the truck fire with a bad crank sensor ? its got a new one on it right now! the old one was broke, Im really stumped on this one, I hope someone can help?

 

When you say that one side wire also has fire, is this when cranking the engine? It has been my experience that when the crank sensor is completely bad or the wiring to it is open, you will not get any fire from any of the plugs. No trigger to tell the computer when to fire the plugs. In the technical section at the top of this forum is a pretty good article on the DIS ignition system that may help to shed some light on your problem.

As far as the fuel pump goes, someone may have bypassed the fuel pump relay to test or make sure that the fuel pump sends the fuel.
