I have been looking for a 88-93 mustang in my area at a decent price for about 6 months now.I was drving past a used car lot,seen a convertible 5.0 LX setting in the lot,nothing special,plain jane car. I am thinking mmmmmm maybe $3000 starting price,I am going to go have a look. I get out and start looking at it,body is in decent shape,some dings and scratches,but no rust. look at the seats,all torn to heck . 95,000 miles. well,then I noticed the price in the corner of the windshield $5995 . I knew they wouldn't come down far enough that would be in my budget,so i was getting ready to drive off without even asking about it when the salesman came out. Of course he gave me the big speech about how nice of a car it is. I ask what the low $ cash is? $5500.I say that is to much for me to pay,I don't feel the car is worth that much,and i get ready to drive off,he starts begging me to drive it. and I ask why? will that cause you to lower the price to $3000,which is what I can pay you for this car right now . he didn't see the humor in it for some reason . then I came home and surfed ebay for awhile,plenty of stangs there in my price range,and in better shape than that one,distance is the only factor in those cars,I have no way to pick one up,and am not going to pay the high delivery charges most sellers want. Just curious what a car in this condition would go for in your area?

 

Well, I was looking through the Classic Car Trader rag at work the other day...plenty of 5.0 Foxes, mid-80s mainly, for about $6000ish.

Yep, yep, yep, the Fox market is quite ridiculous sometimes. I see early 90s Foxes selling for $8000ish, give or take. WIth over 100,000 miles on them, to boot.

When I was toy shopping, I would have settled for a 2.3L ragtop, but I needed a lower priced car with a solid auto tranny to offset the Ranger, so the Mustang was pretty much out. I don't care for the 3.8L either....

So I ended up with a $200 95 3.4L v6/4L60E Camaro. It needs engine work of unknown (so far) extent and a radiator and fan(s), but I'm eyeing a complete 3.4L and LT1 cooling fans from the same seller on Ebay.

My uncle traded his white 89 5.0L/5-speed for his 96 C1500 in 1996. That truck has maybe 2 scratches in the bed, mainly from grocery bags (okay, we joke about that), but he regrets selling that Fox car. Especially since he got next to nothing for trade in. Oh well.

 

I haven't been been watching the prices around here. I have an '89 5.0 I bought new with 72k on it now. I drove it a total of 645 miles in the past 2 years.

This totally astounds me, pretty much everything on page 1 was in the 15k range a big WTF

 

I'm helping a friend build a new stock car out of a 1988 Mustang. Someone stuck a 351W in it but didn't finish it. We got it for $500.
Tomorrow I'm supposed to go pick up another one the same for parts for free.
Buying a used Mustang can be pretty risky. It seems like they've either had the heck run out of them or they've been babied.

 

I've found two Fox body mustangs in this area. One had T-tops, which I really like, it was a 84 for 3000. I also saw a 88 for 4000.

Mustangs are usually going to increase their value the fewer there are of them. Thats why the Fox Body market has really caught on for the last 5 years or so. You can probably expect the 94 through 98 models to catch on next. It all runs in cycles. The only Mustangs I've ever seen that didn't increase in value when their road numbers dropped was anything made from 74 through 78. Pintos and charlies angels mustangs aren't popular.

 

I bought my '89 GT in 1991 for $10,000. It is in pretty good shape minus the AC and transmission (5 spd that acts like a 4 spd). It I were to sell it, which I'm not, a fair price would be around $1000 and I'd be thrilled to get $2000. It's a great car but not worth that much. But finding one now that hasn't been modified somehow might be difficult. Check to see if it was modified then put back to origional. That's pretty common with these cars many mods can be easily put back to stock. I would really hesitate to buy a car you think was just stock with high milage only to find out that a crap load of nitrous had been run through it. Otherwise a fun car with lots of cheap potential.

Too many miles and too many mods. Folks have got to understand that mods to a car are not an investment. You'll be lucky to get 20-30% of what you paid in the mods back out of the car. I see a car that is worth maybe $12-13k. OK, so it has a rebuilt motor. I would expect it to have a running motor if you're going to ask that much money for a car like that. Its probably still a stock block...it may have upgraded rods and pistons. It has been repainted (look in the engine compartment) and they didn't even bother to pull the engine.

Of course it is slated to go to Barrett-Jackson, so we all know that immediately doubles the price of the vehicle.

Well I have a 1990 7up car that totally unmolested (stock original) and it has 31,000 original miles and is in excellent condition.
If I had to sell it the price would start at $17,000.
Try to find one.

 

I just saw a very nice 89 LX on the cover of Ohio Auto & RV that looked pretty nice for $2,850. It says it needs a few things. But if I were in the market for another Mustang, I'd definately look at it. When I bought my 95 GT in 2000, I paid $13,000. Car had 30,000 miles when I bought it, 34,000 now. But, looked at plenty of cars with almost triple the miles, that were $4-5,000 more. I searched for almost a year before I bought my car. If you can hold out, the right one will come along eventually.

 

I could understand the price on the LX I looked at if it were low miles,one owner,always garage kept or something like that,but it looked to me like it had been sitting out a lot with the top down as bad as the seats were cracked up and torn.I will keep looking,i am not in a hurry,by any means.

 

Sorry, but you would never get 17K for it, especially with that mileage. The 7up cars are rare, but not that desirable.

 

What does "with that mileage" mean.
Sounds like you think thats high. I did say 31,000.
Have you seen any with that on them. I have seen two in the past two years that had less than 15000. Everything else is way over 70,000 and is beat to death.
Now this is just my opinion and what I have seen - and I have seen plenty.
