F250 Airbag light blinks and stays on!

Hey, what the heck.
I pulled my CD player and put it back in and now my air bag light won't go out when it self tests. It blinks for a while then stays on steady.
What's up with that -- I thought I was having enough problems with the CD player as it was?

I am not sure what the problem is, but in case someone else knows, what year is your truck?

Try this procedure.

DISARMING THE SYSTEM

Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery.

Disconnect the positive battery cable from the battery.

Wait one minute. This time is required for the back-up power supply in the air bag diagnostic monitor to completely drain. The system is now disarmed.

If you are disarming the system with the intent of testing the system, do not! The SRS is a sensitive, complex system and should only be tested or serviced by a qualified automotive technician. Also, specific tools are needed for SRS testing.

ARMING THE SYSTEM

Connect the positive battery cable.

Connect the negative battery cable.

Stand outside the vehicle and carefully turn the ignition to the RUN position. Be sure that no part of your body is in front of the air bag module on the steering wheel, to prevent injury in case of an accidental air bag deployment.

Ensure the air bag indicator light turns off after approximately 6 seconds. If the light does not illuminate at all, does not turn off, or starts to flash, have the system tested by a qualified automotive technician. If the light does turn off after 6 seconds and does not flash, the SRS is working properly.

Thanks, I will try resetting the airbag system. Will pulling the fuse for a minute accomplish the same thing?

Don't know, so I would have to go by the instructions above. What I think is weird is that they want you to disconnect the negative cable too. There must be some sort of reason for this?

I tried, but it did not work -- I quess I'll have to break down and bring it in to Ford.
Does anybody know if they will be able to bring up an error code to find out exactly what is wrong or will they just replace the board that controls the bag?

If you can read out the trouble code based on the flashes of the air bag light I can give you the code description. My F-350 is a 99.5 but I suspect the codes are the same for the 02 as the 99. Here is the process.

Retrieving Lamp Flash Codes (LFC)

The Electronic Crash Sensor (ECS) monitors the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) for possible faults. If a fault is detected while the ignition switch is in the RUN position, the ECS will illuminate the air bag indicator located in the instrument cluster. When the ignition is cycled (turned off and then turned on), the air bag indicator will flash the two-digit Lamp Fault Code (LFC). The air bag indicator will flash the LFC five times, then it will remain illuminated for the rest of the key cycle. The ECS will also communicate the current and historical DTCs through the Data Link Connector (DLC) , using the New Generation STAR (NGS) Tester. If the air bag indicator does not function, and the system detects a fault condition, the ECS will signal the GEM to activate an audible chime. The chime is a series of five sets of five tone bursts. If the chime or buzzer is heard, the SRS and the air bag indicator requires service.

Lamp fault codes are prioritized. If two or more faults occur at the same time, the fault having the highest priority will be displayed first. After that fault has been corrected, the next highest priority fault will be displayed.

Your my buddy -- the error code was "B1884---27----------15----------Passenger Air Bag Deactivation (PAD) Lamp Inoperative"

Once I knew what the flash code was I turned off the passenger air bag and sure enough the "passenegr air bag off" light did not come. I wiggled the key around in the lock and the light started to work again. I cycled the ignition again and the system tested OK!

You saved me couple hundred, thanks

Just a quick note to say I had issues with my f150 with the blinking Airbag light....Come to find out it was what they call a "clockspring" that is on the steering wheel behind the airbag...............

Did that give you a code 32?

My 02 Explorer gives me a flash code "34" meaning circuit resistance is low. What would I do to find/fix this fault. Thank You Paul in Wisconsin

Do your other controls on the steering wheel like the cruise control work ok? Nobody has wrote in with a 34 code, but lots have written in with a code 32(resistance is high). This is usually caused by bad clockspring behind the steering wheel.

Cruise and horn work fine. Sometimes the fault will go away for several days and then reappears. I checked the flashes again. A definate "34".
